LET’S TALK ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY COST OF “RESCUING” HEALTHY HORSES.

For a moment, let’s assume the best possible outcome. Every NYC carriage horse is placed in a beautiful sanctuary, with excellent care, plenty of space, veterinary attention and enough funding to live comfortably for the rest of its natural life.

Wonderful. Nobody would object to that outcome.

But here’s a question nobody seems to be asking:

What about the horses that ACTUALLY need rescuing?

Across the United States, thousands of horses need homes. Wild mustangs face removal from public lands, many spend extended periods in holding facilities, and some horses ultimately enter slaughter pipelines through sales and transfers.

Meanwhile, these NYC carriage horses already have owners, homes, established routines, veterinary care and a means of supporting their upkeep.

Now imagine hundreds of healthy carriage horses occupying sanctuary places for another 10, 15 or 20 years.

Every place occupied, every dollar spent on feed, every veterinary bill paid and every acre of land used represents resources that could potentially have helped a horse with no secure future at all.

Sanctuaries do not have unlimited land, funding or capacity.

We operate an equine welfare organization. We know firsthand how difficult it is to provide lifelong care for horses that genuinely cannot return to work.

So why are we discussing using scarce rescue resources to retire healthy working horses while other horses face neglect, abandonment, prolonged holding or slaughter?

* This is not an argument that every NYC carriage horse has perfect welfare.
