🐾 EPISODE 1 — ONE DAY OLD

Life in the Whelping Box

Our first full day of life is complete.
Already, these tiny puppies are beginning to change. Their movements are a little stronger as they squirm, root toward Mom, to find their way to nurse. Their eyes and ears are still closed, so right now their world is experienced mostly through touch, warmth and scent.

Their umbilical cords are beginning to dry, preparing to naturally fall away over the next few days. It's one of those tiny changes that's easy to miss unless you're watching them grow day by day.

Meanwhile, Mom is resting comfortably with her babies and doing an incredible amount of work.
She supplies all of their nourishment,warmth and comfort and their hygiene. At this age, the puppies aren't yet able to urinate or have a bowel movement independently. Mom's licking stimulates them to eliminate, and she cleans them afterward.

Newborn puppies also aren't able to regulate their body temperature very well yet, so their environment—and especially the warmth and close contact provided by Mom and their littermates—is extremely important.
And although they may look like they're just eating and sleeping, there's already development taking place. They're wiggling, crawling, rooting and becoming a little more mobile as they learn to navigate their very small world.

For now, life is wonderfully simple:
Mom. Milk. Warmth. Sleep. And each other. ❤️
One day down. A whole lot of growing still to come.
