When my doorbell rings, especially after 6pm, I always know it’s a neighbor or friend bringing me something that needs my help. We’ve been closed to intakes in general due to lack of funding, but I cannot turn down a baby brought to my doorstep by someone who trusts me.
Meet Basil — a little 8-week-old DSH kitten who was on the brink of death when he arrived. Found at a gas station in some bushes by one of my neighbors, he was soaked to the bone from the rain and hypothermic, riddled with fleas and ear mites that left all of his neck and face fur stained red and his gums and nose paper-white from anemia, and so malnourished and underweight that he couldn’t stand up on his own. He should be over 2 lb. at this age and instead, weighed just 0.8 #.
After 48 hours of good food, Revolution, a Dawn bath, a dose of pyrantel, and a heat pad to snuggle up on, he’s a whole new kitten. Still very weak and wobbly, unable to do much yet, but can now stand and is able to take a few wobbly steps to his litterbox and is already using it reliably. He is a smidge fearful, but is VERY affectionate and loving and purrs like mad. Feral kittens do tend to adapt quickly, but this boy is 100% familiar with humans and is far from feral. His people failed him horribly to let him languish and slowly die like that. Regardless, he is now safe, clean, warm, fed, has had immediate veterinary care, and has 2 older foster sister kittens dying to meet him. He won the jackpot, and well-deserved after never knowing anything but starvation and suffering. ❤️
