We have a really great team that we are incredibly grateful for.

Sydney has been part of our seasonal team since the summer of 2023! She is currently a student at UNCW, studying biology with a concentration in the pre veterinary sciences! She is incredibly hard working, smart, compassionate, and she has a natural talent working with animals. 💗

We wanted to thank Sydney for helping us during our busiest months over all the summers and she is always welcome to work on our team throughout the year.

If you are looking for an amazing intern in the veterinary field, Sydney’s your person! Send us a DM and we will connect you!

Thank you Sydney Pugh !!!💗🏆👏🏼🎊

Wild animals need a little extra help during extreme heat, too.

As temperatures climb across parts of Europe, wildlife experts are reminding people that birds and other animals can struggle in prolonged heat. Birds often cool themselves by sitting in the shade, holding their beaks open to pant, or bathing in shallow water. One of the simplest ways to help is by putting out a shallow dish of fresh water in a safe, shaded spot and keeping bird baths clean. If you feed birds, keeping feeders stocked can also help reduce the amount of time they spend searching for food in the hottest parts of the day.

Experts say healthy wild animals usually know how to keep themselves cool, so it's best not to handle or move them unless they're clearly injured or in immediate danger. If you find an animal that appears sick or distressed, contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for guidance.

Companion animals aren't the only ones who suffer the perils of fireworks. The loud and spontaneous fireworks explosions can cause flight responses and disorientation in wildlife. For example, New Year’s fireworks in Rome heralding the arrival of 2021 were met with mass bird deaths of an unknown cause, and in 2021, a gray fox is believed to have died as a result of fireworks; the frightened animal ran into a road and was struck by a car, causing fatal injuries, in Orange County, California.

It’s clear that fireworks cause significant harm — and that harm is compounded by the fact that it’s both unnecessary and completely preventable. The Animal Legal Defense Fund advocates in favor of fireworks bans to protect animals and the ecosystems in which they live.
