As I sit here in the airport waiting on my next (delayed) flight, I keep thinking about a conversation I had with another passenger.

He noticed the empty dog carrier beside me and asked about it. I explained that I had just dropped off one of our dogs with his owner after finishing a show weekend. We chatted for a bit, and I mentioned that I breed and show Chinese Cresteds.

Then came the questions…

ā€œHow much do they cost?ā€

ā€œHow much does it cost to show them?ā€

After I gave him a realistic breakdown, he looked at me and said, ā€œWow… why even do that? What’s the point? You’ll never make that money back.ā€

And he was absolutely right.

You don’t.

For me, it’s never been about the money.

It’s about spending my weekends surrounded by my favorite animals. It’s about challenging myself to become a better breeder, handler, and competitor. It’s about the science behind breeding—the genetics, the probabilities, the planning, and the lifelong pursuit of producing something even better than the generation before. It’s about competing against people you admire, learning from them, and every once in a while… beating them.

It’s about the journey.

If we’re talking dollars and cents, this hobby is ridiculously expensive. In the last six weeks alone, I’ve spent over $4,300 showing just three dogs across four show circuits. Yesterday I paid another $650 in superintendent fees and entries for a four-day show next month—and that doesn’t even include fuel, meals, grooming or travel expenses.

So when people assume that reputable breeders are making a fortune because of what well-bred puppies cost, I can’t help but laugh.

Not even close.

The truth is, most preservation breeders aren’t doing this to get rich. We do it because we are passionate about preserving and improving a breed we love. We celebrate every title earned, every puppy that exceeds our expectations, and every family whose lives are changed by one of our dogs.

Would it be nice if this hobby paid for itself?

Sure.

But that’s never been the reason.

We do it because we love the dogs. We love the challenge. We love watching years of planning come together. And yes… every now and then… we even enjoy the dog shows. šŸ˜‰ā¤ļø

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately about the future of Sunval and the long-term goals for our breeding program.

One thing that has always defined Sunval is that we finish far more dogs than we breed. Every decision we make is intentional—not only for the success of our own program, but for the preservation and betterment of the Chinese Crested breed as a whole.

With that in mind, we are considering the possibility of placing one of our young Sunval CC show dogs.

This could be an incredible opportunity for:
• A serious performance competitor who loves earning titles on both ends of a dog’s name but may not have the time or experience to campaign in conformation.
• A preservation breeder looking to incorporate proven breed quality, structure, and pedigree into their program.
• Or even an active companion home looking for a well-started young dog with demonstrated breed quality and a solid foundation.

I want to be very clear—this is not a rehoming situation. This is simply us thoughtfully evaluating the future direction of our program and whether the right partnership exists for one exceptional dog.

The right home is far more important than a quick placement. Any potential home must align with Sunval’s values and commitment to the breed. Naturally, pricing will reflect the dog’s training, accomplishments, and titles.

At this point, this is simply something we’re considering. If you believe you may be the right fit, or would like to have a conversation, feel free to reach out privately.
