We don't often have the time to post more than just pictures of what we do on a daily basis, but every now and then we have cases that just stick with us. With permission, I wanted to share a horse that was part of an animal seizure case involving neglect. Several months ago we were called out to address his foot that was 3x the size that it should be. After x-rays were taken, it was discovered that a wire was wrapped around his foot almost like a man-made hobble. Because of his poor body condition, Dr. West did not think that it was safe to sedate him, but felt confident that he could get it out using a local nerve block. We are so fortunate that this horse, despite his overall neglect, had the sweetest disposition and stood like a statue for the entirety of the surgery. The case went to court and he has since been surrendered to a local rescue where he is making lots of progress with his weight. His foot is now fully recovered, though he does have permanent scar tissue build-up from how long the wire was embedded.
