You are my ride or die, my heart, and truly one of my greatest teachers💜

As a professional dog trainer, I’ve worked with so many wonderful dogs and their families — but this girl…
She’s taught me just as much as I’ve taught her.

From reminding me of the importance of play to earning my certification from the Karen Pryor Academy, she’s been beside me every step of the way.

A dog needs to feel safe before successful training can begin.

A dog’s emotional state significantly impacts their ability to learn and focus.

Here’s why a feeling of safety is so important for your pup’s training:

🔹It reduces stress and anxiety
🔹It builds trust between you and your pup
🔹It helps prevents fear-based behaviors
🔹It builds a positive association with training
🔹It reduces the impact of distractions

So, how do you know if your pup is ready to learn?

✔️Know your pup’s body language – what does his tail, body, face look like when he’s relaxed & happy?

✔️Is he engaged with you?

✔️Is he happily taking whatever rewards he prefers – treats, toys or snuggles?

✔️Does he get excited when he thinks you are about to start training?

Let’s get down to the fundamentals of socialization…

YES
• Allow your puppy to approach new experiences at their own pace.
• Provide positive reinforcement during this process.
• Always prioritize your puppy’s emotional well-being during socialization and training.

NO
• Don’t force your puppy into interactions or situations that make him fearful or uncomfortable.
• Forcing interactions can have long-lasting negative effects on your puppy’s behavior and temperament.

At the core, I believe that socialization should be a time of exploration & learning for both you and your pup.

Socialization for puppies is a crucial process that involves exposing them to the following:
🔹People
🔹Other animals
🔹New environments
🔹Body handling and grooming
🔹Common and novel objects
🔹A variety of sights and smells

The goal of socialization is to help puppies develop into well-adjusted, confident, and friendly adult dogs.

During the socialization process, please remember to:
✔️Proceed at your puppy’s pace
✔️ Give your pup a choice to “opt out”
✔️Monitor your pup’s reactions/body language at all times
✔️Be patient and understanding

Has there been a time in your pup’s life when he showed hesitation or fear during a new experience?
