Smoky Needs Your Help 🩶

Different rules apply if you’re a black dog. Let alone if you’re 9 years old. But Smoky doesn’t realize that.

Most people will continue to scroll through this post, but Smoky deserves a voice. He deserves a chance. So please, read, share, engage. Let’s give Smoky a chance.

After one year in the shelter system and 9 months in a foster home, on June 7th, he’ll return to the shelter due to no fault of his own. During those 9 months, he’s learned what love was. He’s learned stability and comfort. He’s found happiness, peace, and is thriving; however, he continues to search for his forever home.

But that hasn’t put a damper on his spirit. He’s full of life: affectionate, adventuresome, and social. But now he needs to find his people before it’s too late.

Unfortunately, his time is drawing to a close before he returns back to the shelter.

Here’s why you’ll love him:

-affectionate, friendly, adventurous
-medium energy
-plenty of pep in his step in his golden years
-house-trained
-quiet + polite gentlemen
-fantastic car-rider!
-knows commands like sit, stay, shake, and down
-treat motivated + takes them very politely
-self-entertains with durable toys
-happiest on the bed snoozing or curled up beside you
-nondestructive when left out on his own
-fan of fetch, he’ll even bring you the ball back!
-friendly and social with kids he’s met on walks + would be best suited for older kids
-wants to be your one and only (no other pets, please!)
-tolerant of handling and bathtime
-might be excited and strong on leash at first, but settles into walks nicely
-loves the water, swimming, and exploring!

Some of these pics are from Gus’ r&r out of the shelter - but the last picture? That’s Gus waiting to be returned to his kennel when he had to come back to the shelter. Can you put a smile on this guy’s face again? Here’s what we know about Gus!

Gus has been such a sweet, fun staycation guest and has really shown himself to be a loving, smart, and playful boy.

He does well in a crate. He may whine or protest a little at first, but he settles quickly and sleeps through the night. He has also done great outside the crate—he spent a full night sleeping peacefully on the couch in his bed and has been left home alone for errands without getting into anything.

Gus is a good walker, but he needs slower-paced walks because of his disability and unsteady gait. If he moves too fast, he can skid, scrape up his knuckles, or break nails, so he does best with someone mindful of his mobility limitations. M

I have only heard him bark once all week. He also lives around cats here and has shown very little interest in them—he does not chase or try to play with them.

Gus is incredibly smart and very tuned in to his people. He makes great eye contact, listens closely when spoken to, knows his name, and responds well to commands like sit, stay, go lay down, no, and no begging. He comes when called and clearly wants to please.

He does have a little nervous energy and may need time to build trust and feel secure. He has never shown aggression, and I have not felt unsafe with him at all. He has shown no issues with adults handling food, bones, or toys, and has not shown food aggression.
Because of this, I would recommend Gus for a home with older children or adults who understand dog boundaries and can respect his space while he builds trust. He is affectionate, likes being close to his person, and after getting his energy out, he settles down nicely.

Overall, Gus is a wonderful dog who would thrive in a foster or adoptive home that can support his mobility needs, give him structure, playtime, and patience. He is sweet, loyal, smart, and deserves a home where he can feel safe and comfortable.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care and Control is FULL and euthanasia will happen today if dogs don't get out. How can you help?

1. Foster: apply to become a foster (short or long-term helps!) and literally save a life (https://charlottenc.seamlessdocs.com/f/EQ79Ro)
2. Staycation: if you're ready to add a pup to your family, grab one for a staycation (adoption trial) for up to 10 days or just give a dog a much needed temp break!
3. Share: the easiest way to help - you never know who may see it

While you're at it, please sign the petition (link here - https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-destruction-of-charlotte-s-animal-shelter-trails?signed=true) to save the walking trails at the shelter for dogs and volunteers! Without these trails, dogs have NOWHERE to fully relax away from the chaos and noise of the shelter. This would lead to more kennel stress and ultimately more euthanasia.
