SHWL Behind the Scenes Welcomd to the silly side and behind the scenes of Snug Harbor Wildlife Rescue and Sanctuary in Chapin South Carolina!

We didn’t want to just create a back up page but one that would highlight the more cute moments and stories of the animals in our care!

It’s been a while since we have done a Stewy update! Stewart is one of our sanctuary squirrels who was kicked out of his nest as a baby. Our guess is mama knew that something was wrong with him and that can be the brutal part of Mother Nature is they will abandon babies who aren’t 100% healthy.

He has cerebral hyperplasia which means his cerebellum did not develop all of the way. This causes issues with his motor function, he also has different color variations-considered a blonde eastern grey squirrel, which can be common with genetic mutations or inbreeding.

Stewy has had such an amazing journey with us and just makes me love him that much more. His coordination and strong will to do life just continues to go leaps and bounds over what we thought he would at one point. He overcame spells where he was having seizures and loosing weight dramatically- we thought that was the end for him but he pulled through that and continued to get even stronger than he was before all of that.

He is very much one of our little miracles, and love watching him thrive and play with his cage mate Timmy, who is also a forever baby with us too with a spinal injury that went untreated being with the person who found him for several weeks before getting him help.

This picture of Stew was last night after his bath. I mean just look at that face!!!!! Him and Timmy have to get baths every week, with both of their disabilities and injuries both tend to tee tee everywhere even on each other at times. 🤫😂🤫

We have about 25 different animals with us that have different disabilities and with us forever. Keeping up behind each other their special needs and quirks alone is a full time job on top of the babies being rehabilitated.

The sanctuary guys always hold on to our heart strings a little tighter, we spend a lot more time with them and are able to spoil them knowing they aren’t going back into the wild. A huge chunk of my day and night is walking into a room to put something away or feed other babies and then seeing the ones that are not able to be released and they sucker me in to pets and mini play sessions- getting me completely side tracked from the tasks at hand.

We do definitely need to get our website updated for the sponsorship opportunities for all of our sanctuary animals, the sponsorships go towards their annual vet visits, toys, treats, normal food costs, and anything else you would like special to go to your sponsored friend.

We will have to get some more updated videos of Stew and Timmy playing and how much better Stew is able to get around since his last video months ago.

We hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Boys will be boys no matter the species!

That raccoon you see in the window…that’s Tex!! Yes the little boy who had a massive surgery last week!

As his rehab mama was outside caring for another raccoon in her care, Tex heard her out there talking and climbed up into the window of the bathroom he has been resting in with his recovery.

He just had one of his front legs fully amputated after an accident and climbed on the toilet, and into the blinds to spy on what Amy was doing…if this doesn’t show how insanely resilient and tough these guys are. Now he did get fussed at too because this is definitely not the “taking it easy” orders the doctor gave!

Tex goes back to the vet this week for a follow up on his surgery, we have collected $600 of the $1300 from his surgery cost, thankfully his follow up appointment should only be about $80 if no further meds or imaging is needed etc.

Any donations towards his vet bill are still needed, we had to use some of our formula funds to cover the bill at time of service.

We have been so happy to see how well he’s doing and how unfazed he seems and isn’t skipping a beat on continuing on his with his silly antics!

Won’t be long before these guys are set free! Well another pound and a half for the first group before they can be released, the other one about half a pound to go! 20 others in cages around the property and another 30 to be rotated out behind them as they wonder off into the woods.

Watching these babies grow from tiny pinkies and eyes closed babies to big ole fluffy and spicy opossums is always amazing. Always bitter sweet to release them out to the life they are suppose to live out there in the woods.

Earlier this week our friends with Wildlife Rehab Group of SC based out of Greenville sent a call our way for a juvenile cottontail who was found injured in the middle of the road. The sweet couple who found her drove 40 minutes to Chapin around 10pm to bring her to us.

After about 48 hours of observation and care we knew this little friend was okay to release back out. This is always such a celebrated moment with cottontails especially after any kind of traumatic event!

🐰 We love a hoppy ending!!! 🐰

Kacey is such an asset to our team!!! Any help getting her this incubator is so appreciated!! Will help so many babies in her care for years to come!

I’ve loved animals my whole life, rescuing any kind from a young age and a few years ago found a passion for squirrels and opossums! Baby squirrels get fed every 2-3 hours and need intensive care. I currently use other warming methods that aren’t always reliable, so I believe this is a much need...

Well hello newborn baby raccoon!! Do you think we have a boy or a girl?!

Thank you so much to our buddy Clay Boland for getting these babies to us, unfortunately the other baby passed moments after arrival. This little one it perky and drinking well so we have our fingers crossed!!

Each baby raccoon we take in costs about $800-1000 to raise, $500-600 is in formula alone for one kit! Then we have vaccines and other essentials too, any donations towards their care is so greatly appreciated!

Ever wonder what our routines look like? Here’s a glimpse into our end of day/night routines! This is usually the third or fourth check in for most of these guys, whether cleaning puppy pads, and feedings. Our night time/shutdown starts around 11pm-midnight and wraps up around 2-3am depending. But just look at all these sweet faces! Hopefully one day soon I’ll get a a video of all our sanctuary babies and their stories.
