This past weekend’s 2-day whirlwind travel to CT and back to IL ushers in a very significant change for our ranch. And it’s a culmination of events going back four years ago to a 6-ring Nigerian-only show in Southern IL.

I was very new at breeding and showing at that time. In one of those “It’s a small world” moments, I got acquainted with Bryan Rivard and Nikki Rivard. A CT couple traveling down to pick up some special goats from Mark Weir and helping Mark prep and show some of his awesome Agape’s Prize animals at that 6-ring show in DuQuoin IL while there.

Turned out we both had something in common…. filled doeling reservations from 3G Family Farm that Spring that involved a changed reservation on my part that led to a filled reservation for them. What was more memorable was that Nikki observed that I had a nice 3G doeling that won her class (in spite of my lack of showmanship skills) and took the time immediately after exiting the ring to offer some helpful tips to show her at her best in the championship ring. Those tips helped Bellona earn Reserve Grand Champion that day… the best showing an animal from our young herd had achieved to that point.

In the years that followed we stayed in touch. Their Meadowview Farm was breeding some beautiful goats heavily influenced by their buck Agape’s Prize Connect The Dott (Agape’s Prize Axl Rose CQ x Woodbridge Farm Undermine). The kind of goats they were producing mirrored what I envisioned for our farm and we had the opportunity to add a couple of their kids to our herd.

When Bryan notified me recently that they were, sadly, going to do a final dispersal of their herd, I knew I wanted to have a part in continuing with some of their animals. What started out as “maybe these two or three” became, amazingly, so much more. Ponto Ranch is now home to no less than 14 of their loved goats. That van coming back was PACKED and LOUD!😆.

We will get a post or two out soon regarding our wonderful new additions. Right now I just need to catch up on some sleep!

Thank you Bryan and Nikki and your sweet daughter Sophia for allowing us to give so much of your herd a home here with us. And thanks for your generosity and friendship. I hope we can do right by all these wonderful goats.

This afternoon 1YO FF Ponto Ranch TRU Candy Heart kidded with two large doelings. Sired by Pan’s Paddock Abacus, one is the same color as he is… and it’s my absolute favorite (Cou Clair). Black is also a color we rarely get here, so that was cool too.

Candy delivered both doelings standing up, unassisted, and without a peep. I was helping her clean up the first and didn’t realize a second one had slid out… not sure she did either😆. That’s the kind of kidding I like!

We have 6 bucklings that will be ready for their new homes by mid-May. All are disbudded, CD&T vaccinated, and given 3 doses of coccidiosis preventative. We will wether them just before they leave for their new homes.

All six have been handled daily and love attention. Minimum purchase of two required so they have a buddy to go to their new homes with. We can hold them until the end of May if you want to put a deposit down to reserve them. 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ each.

I am really liking what I see in the development of our youngest herd sire, Drewem EZ Spill The Beans (Scoop). He is just over 13 weeks old and starting to stretch out, while showing nice width between those clean front legs and… most notably… great width between the hocks.

Where did his barn name come from? Well, Dede came up with it. Cute play on his registered name. He’s got the scoop and he’s spilling the beans😝.

I can hardly wait to see what this boy does for our herd. His granddam on both sides bring stellar udders to the table… and a lot more.

We have gotten through the first wave of kidding. We have a break until a pretty busy April.

All doelings born so far are reserved or retained. We have twin boys from each of three litters that are beautiful, affectionate and will be looking for good homes. Videos of each set and details to follow!

A chilly good morning to everyone. -38 wind chill currently. And of course the stock tank water heater went out in the doe pen sometime during the night and froze beyond breaking open. But hey…. I’m thankful we have power and the ability to bucket warm water down to them until I pick up a new heater.

I probably need my head examined. I would venture to guess that I’m the only one insane enough to carry a 1 year old stinky buck 50 yards to deposit into the doe pen (because he decided walking outside in this arctic wind isn’t worth a date with a hottie doe) to hopefully breed my last remaining doe on the breeding plans.

And just in case you’re wondering… no, she either wasn’t ready or wasn’t interested🙄

But livestock farmers are a different breed, so maybe I’m not that “special”? Stay safe, everyone!

Looks like this next litter to announce is gonna be on the small side as far as numbers go but we sure hope it gives us ...
