Harnessing PRP for Tough Tendon Tears! 🩺🐴
Tendons are notoriously tough to heal. Because they have limited blood supply compared to muscles, injuries like tears at the tendon attachment often face prolonged recovery times, weak scar tissue formation, or re-injury risks. That is where Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy comes in to kickstart the healing process!
Recently, we’ve been managing a tear in the gastrocnemius (gastroc) tendon on a patient who has been an absolute champion throughout treatment: this patient is a mule! 🫏✨
The Muscle & The Injury:
The gastrocnemius muscle is a crucial engine in the equine hindlimb. Working alongside the reciprocal apparatus, it is primarily responsible for flexing the stifle and extending the hock—providing the power behind every stride, jump, and push-off. A tear at its tendon attachment compromises this entire support system and makes weight-bearing extremely uncomfortable.
Why PRP Therapy Makes the Difference:
PRP is created by spinning down a sample of the patient's own blood to concentrate the platelets. When injected directly into the site of injury, these platelets release a massive dose of natural growth factors. This targeted therapy:
• Recruits regenerative cells directly to the lesion
• Stimulates collagen synthesis and fiber reorganization
• Significantly accelerates structural repair in low-circulation tissues
The Power of Controlled Rehabilitation:
While PRP delivers the biological spark to start healing, controlled rehabilitation therapy is what guides how that new tissue forms. Here at our rehabilitation facility in Southern Oregon, we design tailored protocols to ensure optimal recovery. Complete stall rest alone can lead to weak, disarranged scar tissue. By implementing a carefully staged exercise program—starting with strict controlled hand-walking—we apply the right amount of dynamic mechanical stress to the tendon. This stress signals the newly forming collagen fibers to align parallel to one another along lines of tension, creating a much stronger, flexible repair resistant to re-injury.
The Results So Far:
At the 4-week progress ultrasound scan, we are seeing remarkable improvement! The images show strong early tissue remodeling and improved fiber alignment right at the tendon insertion point, proving that combining PRP with precise rehab is paying off.
