Horses need experiences that make trust possible; we can't just say, "Hey horse, trust me, you're safe. "

If we create conditions where they can discover safety for themselves by allowing them to experience something different, that is the optimal LEARNING phase. We simply can't ask them to stop bracing, rushing, shutting down or anticipating.

We need to give them the chance to RESET, PROCESS, EXPLORE, LEARN, and DEVELOP NEW PATTERNS.

The smallest change in an interaction can give a horse completely different information and those experiences begin to shape what they expect next.

❗️THE HORSE EXPERIENCES❗
New expectations come from new experiences, we can't simply tell a horse: "Don't worry." "Don't brace." "Don't rush." "Trust me."

The horse needs an experience that gives them a reason to believe something different is possible. I don't equate good horsemanship with forcing a new response; I believe it's about creating conditions where the horse can RESET, PROCESS, EXPLORE, LEARN, and DEVELOP NEW PATTERNS.

It's not always the BIG things we are looking for in the work; many times it's the SMALL things that make the biggest impact.

A pause.
A softer response.
A moment of curiosity.
A horse choosing to investigate instead of avoid.
A horse discovering that the answer doesn't always have to be the one they've used before.

New expectations come from new experiences, and that is how we begin to change the story.

Your horse may be responding to what they expect will happen next. If you think about it...the request most likely hasn't changed, and neither has the environment. BUT the response may begin before you've even finished asking!

In other words, ANTICIPATION!

Many times the behavior we are trying to change is actually an expectation the horse has learned.

Rather than asking: "How do I stop this behavior?"
Try asking: "What is my horse expecting to happen next?"

That question will change the entire conversation.
Why? Because once we understand the expectation…we can begin creating a different experience.

❗️THE HORSE EXPECTS ❗️
Every interaction teaches a horse something about what comes next.

The horse's perspective: If I move away when you raise your hand…If I brace when you take contact…If I rush when you ask me to move…If I become still when pressure increases…I may begin to expect those things.

➡️ I'm not being difficult, I'm learning!

Horses are incredibly good at recognizing patterns, and
sometimes they respond to what they expect to happen, not necessarily what is happening.

I've experienced this many times with my mare Roxie. She expects things before they even happen and responds accordingly. Sometimes she's right on the money, and sometimes she responds completely inappropriately due to me and the patterns I taught her.

What I had to do to get the response I wanted I needed to change the experience attached to the cue because changing the cue wasn't always enough.

This week:
The Horse Expects.
What is your horse expecting when you walk into the arena?

❗️INTERVENTION should follow OBSERVATION ❗️
The behavior you're seeing may or may not be a reflection of what is going on right now.

Horses can carry expectations forward from experiences that happened long before you met them. One that rushes, one that braces, one that anticipates pressure, one that shuts down, one who seems "fine" but never really settles.

The last one, the one that never seems to really settle...have you ever been on a horse that feels like a tick ready to explode at any moment yet somehow they hold it together?

I've been focusing on asking "What might this horse have learned in the past that he is responding to in the present?" Rather than jumping to the conclusion it's "behavioral" and I need to correct the behavior.

The intervention should follow the observation. We need to understand the horse in front of us before we decide what it needs.

The horse remembers; the more we understand that, the more we can begin creating different experiences.

❗️The Memory of the Horse ❗️
I'm not talking about obvious things: a bad fall, a race, a trailer ride, or some other difficult encounter.
🔹
I think they remember the smaller things even more so...
🔹
How pressure felt, what happened when they said "no", was slowing down an option, whether their body had a chance to recover, whether or not humans listened or asked again without waiting for a response?
🔹
Sorry to say, a horse's history doesn't disappear just because they change locations or owners.
🔹
I think we sometimes forget about the history and how that may impact the horse, BUT I'm also here to tell you it doesn't have to define the FUTURE!!
🔹
If we take a moment before we decide what a horse needs to change, it helps to understand what the horse may already be carrying forward.
🔹
This week, we focus on The Horse Remembers, and understanding the past could change the way we see the present.

Putting it all together like pieces of a puzzle!

➡️ The Mind Remembers ⬅️
Experiences shape how a horse responds.

➡️ The Gut Remembers ⬅️
Nutrition and digestion are part of regulation.

➡️ The Body Remembers ⬅️
Movement, compensation, and tension can become familiar patterns.

The MOST important piece ➡️ THE HORSE REMEMBERS ⬅️

They remember the environment, the pressure, the routine, and experiences.

They remember things that made them feel safe and things that didn't.

The horse remembers how we approach them, how we ask for things, and how WE respond to what they say.

Understanding a horse isn't only about getting them physically ready. It's about understanding the horse we are asking to trust us.

The Horse Remembers....
What does your horse's history look like from their point of view?

❗️BRACING ISN'T ALWAYS RESISTANCE ❗️
When we feel our horse brace, we tend to think: "He's resisting me."

Have you ever thought your horse may be trying to create stability, and bracing is a familiar strategy? Or if your horse doesn't feel secure enough, for whatever reason, to let go and relax?

To clarify, this doesn't mean every brace is emotional, and it doesn't mean every brace is physical.

What it means to me is we can't put horses into neat little boxes!

Mind. Gut. Body. Environment. Training. Experience.

We cannot separate these; they're all part of the same animal. The common thread in this conversation once again.
IT'S ALL CONNECTED

🐴 The mind remembers.
🐴 The gut remembers.
🐴 The body remembers.

Next week... the piece that ties all of those together.
🐴 The Horse Remembers.
