Sometimes the best photos are the ones you never planned.
I had just pulled into the driveway after getting home from a photography event when a rainstorm was moving through and this incredible rainbow appeared over our farm. I knew I probably had only a few minutes before it disappeared, so I did what any completely reasonable photographer would do — ran into the house, rounded up the dogs, grabbed my camera, and basically bum-rushed everyone outside for an impromptu photo session. 😂
I’m still not sure what I’m more impressed by: that I managed to get all three dogs outside and ready before the rainbow disappeared, or that after being abruptly summoned from the house, all three actually sat together and cooperated for me.
Either way, these may be some of my favorite photographs I’ve ever taken.
The stormy sky, that incredible light breaking through after the rain, the pasture and fence line, and a rainbow that lasted only a few minutes made for a pretty spectacular backdrop. But when I look at these photos, it’s still the dogs I see first.
These three are such a huge part of our lives. Each one so different, each with their own personality, quirks, strengths, and ways of making us laugh. We spend so much time training them, working with them, traveling with them, and simply sharing everyday life with them that sometimes I forget just how special it is to have all three of them right here, right now.
As a photographer, I’ve taken more photos than I could ever count. But I have a feeling these are going to be the kind I treasure a little differently.
Our dogs. Our farm. One incredible rainbow. And a few fleeting minutes when everything came together perfectly. 🖤🌈
