Some pronghorn coming through the shop right now. Sheaths are removed, thoroughly cleaned, and oiled before getting reattached to the finished skull.

Would you believe this is the same elk? This dead head got quite the makeover! I loved bringing this one back to life!

Starting this year, Eastern Prairie Euros will be using the maceration method for skull cleaning.

What this means: Maceration is a process that naturally lets bacteria break down the tissue on the bone, rather than cooking it off.

Pros: this process cleans the bone very well. It leaves all of the fine nasal bones intact, and eliminates the chance of fat being cooked into the bone, making the degreasing process much more effective and efficient.

Cons: this method takes a little longer, but it’s well worth it. Once the process is started in a temperature controlled environment, it takes roughly 1 to 2 weeks for tissue to come off the bone. After that it’s the same degreasing process.

It’s been a busy summer getting geared up for this fall and making sure I have what I need to change the process. But, this will be well worth it to provide a higher quality mount that can’t be beat. I look forward to seeing you all this fall!
