Dos and Don’ts of Approaching a Dog
DO:
• Ask the owner before approaching.
• Approach calmly and from an angle.
• Give the dog space and let them come to you.
• Pay attention to the dog’s body language.
• Respect the dog if they choose not to interact. (THIS!!!)
DON’T:
• Walk directly toward a dog.
• Reach over their head or lean over them.
• Crowd, hug, or corner an unfamiliar dog.
• Stare directly into their eyes.
• Assume every dog wants to be pet. (THIS!!!)
Good interactions start with respecting the dog’s space and letting them have a choice.
