‼️PLEASE PROTECT YOUR PETS! ‼️
Hunting season is here, and with it comes another very real danger for pets who are allowed to roam or pets who accidentally get away from home. As much as we would all love to believe that everyone in this world is good, the unfortunate reality is that not everyone is. There are individuals out there who have the mentality that anything interfering with their hunt, is a problem that needs to be eliminated. And unfortunately, sometimes that includes someone’s family pet.
I’ve already received multiple calls where one of my greatest fears is that this exact situation may have occurred. I certainly hope that isn’t the case, but it’s a reality we cannot afford to ignore, especially in our rural communities. Your pets do not understand property lines nor do they understand hunting seasons and the dangers that may be waiting for them just beyond the safety of their own yard. And they certainly don’t understand that not every human they encounter will have their best interests at heart.
PLEASE, protect your family pets with the same seriousness that you would protect your human family members. I cannot stress enough how important it is to supervise your animals when they are outside, regardless of how well trained they are or how many years they’ve stayed close to home. If you don’t have a fenced yard, please consider investing in a reliable GPS tracking collar. (Fi, Tractive, Garmin) And I specifically mean a GPS tracking collar, NOT an Apple AirTag. AirTags rely on nearby Apple devices to help report their location, which makes them particularly unreliable in remote and heavily wooded areas. A dedicated GPS collar with appropriate coverage can provide much better tracking capabilities. And KEEP IT CHARGED!
I hear it all the time … “They never leave the yard.” “They always come when I call. “They’ve lived here their entire life.” “I only turned my back for a second.” And I believe every single one of those families. But the unfortunate reality is that it only takes ONE time. ONE distraction. ONE scent. ONE unexpected noise. ONE second!!! And suddenly, the animal that was standing beside you is gone. That one moment can turn into hours of searching, days of sleepless nights, weeks of uncertainty and even months of heartbreak. And sometimes, families are left wondering what happened for the rest of their lives.
I spend countless hours helping families search for animals who disappeared in circumstances they never imagined could happen to them. I see the desperation, the exhaustion, the guilt, and the heartbreak that comes with not knowing where a beloved pet is. And I can promise you, prevention is so much easier than recovery.
This post is not an attack on hunters. I know many responsible, ethical hunters who would never intentionally harm someone’s pet. But we cannot pretend that everyone shares those same values. Your pet’s safety should never depend on the kindness or judgment of a stranger. So, PLEASE, especially during hunting season, be mindful of where your animals are, how far they can wander, and how quickly something can go wrong. They depend on us to recognize the dangers they cannot. Love them enough to protect them BEFORE they become another missing pet flyer.
