JOB POST
** ATTENTION **
This is not a position for someone who simply wants to spend the day playing with dogs. It is a hands-on learning opportunity for someone who wants to develop real knowledge of canine behavior and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the dogs in our care.
DOG HANDLER
Do you love dogs enough to want to truly understand them?
Blue Step – Dog Behavior is looking for a Dog Handler who is interested in much more than simply playing with dogs.
This position is for someone who wants to learn how dogs communicate, recognize signs of stress or discomfort, understand individual temperaments, and learn how to create positive, appropriate interactions between dogs.
You will be responsible for walking dogs, managing and regulating their interactions, observing their behavior, and learning how to match dogs based on temperament and compatibility. You will learn to recognize the subtle differences between a dog who is excited, overwhelmed, uncomfortable, fearful, playful, or truly enjoying an interaction—and, just as importantly, learn how to respond appropriately.
What you will gain from this experience goes far beyond being a dog handler.
You will develop a deeper understanding of canine body language, behavior, communication, and emotional well-being. You will learn how to read a dog before problems arise, make thoughtful decisions about which dogs are compatible, and help create interactions that are safe, appropriate, and enriching.
These skills will give you a foundation that can benefit you throughout your career working with dogs. As your knowledge grows, you will become more confident in handling different personalities and situations, better able to recognize and prevent stress, and more capable of building trust with dogs who may be nervous, excitable, or challenging.
This will help you become someone who doesn't just handle dogs, but truly understands them.
Our goal is to provide every dog with an experience that is safe, enriching, fulfilling and respectful of who they are as an individual.
If you are curious about why dogs behave the way they do, eager to learn, and passionate about providing dogs with the best possible experience, we would love to meet you.
