POP QUIZ! Drop your answer below BEFORE you go Googling. Honor system!

One of the things I run into all the time is confusion about the differences between therapy animals, emotional support animals, and service animals.

And honestly? I get it.

They're all animals helping humans, the terms get thrown around incorrectly ALL the time, and the laws and access rights aren't the same... not to mention the people willfully misleading you to make a quick buck!

So we're going to have a little fun with it this week.

King's Creatures is officially getting settled into the Carmel area, and one of the things I'm most excited about is getting out into the community and meeting my fellow ridiculously invested pet people!

So, hi! I'm Laura King. 👋

I've been professionally training animals since 2012, but my animal obsession started LONG before that. I grew up tagging along with my veterinarian grandfather at his clinic and farm, got my degree in Biology, started professionally training animals at the Saginaw Children's Zoo, and eventually worked for Joel Slaven's Professional Animals at SeaWorld Orlando and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Found Chicago, and a couple Wisconsin animal shelters before launching King's Creatures in 2017.

I've trained everything from dogs and cats to parrots, otters, lemurs, camels, snakes, tarantulas and cockroaches. Yes. Cockroaches can be trained!

These days, my specialty is helping people train their dogs and cats to become exceptional therapy animals and adventure pets.

Basically, I want you and your pet to communicate clearly, trust each other wholeheartedly, and actually ENJOY doing life together.

King's Creatures spent seven wonderful years in Eastern Iowa, and this summer we packed up the humans, dogs, cat and approximately 847 boxes of animal-training equipment and moved to Indiana.

This Friday night, Korra and I are heading to our first local vendor event!

I'll be at Dog Days of Summer at from 6–10 PM, and I am VERY excited to start meeting more of our new pet-loving community.

So if you're local, come say hi!

One of my favorite things about therapy animal work is how something as simple as showing up with your animal can create connection.

A therapy animal visit might give someone something to look forward to, start a conversation between people who otherwise wouldn't have talked, or just make a regular day a little more fun.

I love that.

Training animals can improve their lives and ours, but some of the coolest things happen when we take those well-trained, happy animals out into our communities and share a little bit of that joy with other people too. 💙

I believe Adventure Teams build better communities.

One of my favorite things about training?

When something that used to be A Whole Thing™ just… isn’t anymore.

The doorbell rings. Your pet settles back down.

You grab the leash. Nobody loses their mind.

You go somewhere new. They look to you like, “Cool. What are we doing?”

You have people over and actually get to enjoy having people over.

Those little moments are the whole point!

Yes, I love big training goals. Therapy animal certification! Adventures! Field trips! All the fun stuff!

But training should also just make your regular Tuesday night with your pet better.
