What's something you LOVE about the community you call home? Whether you're here in Hamilton County or following along from somewhere else, I'd love to hear what makes your corner of the world special! 💙🐾

Today, I had the pleasure of being featured in Good Day Carmel, a newsletter from OneZone Chamber, AND attending the final 2026 Carmel Small Business Network meeting, where I got to hear from Carmel's mayor and meet so many fellow small business owners and the people who support them!

We only moved to Hamilton County in July, but goodness, what a blessing this community has already been!

I've been so impressed by how much Carmel, OneZone, and all of Hamilton County do to support small businesses and help the little guys succeed. There's a real sense of community here, and it's been so much fun getting to know the people and businesses that make it special.

I'm so excited to continue growing King's Creatures here, building relationships, and finding ways to give back to the community that's already welcomed us so warmly!

I've spent a whole lot of my life with animals, and they never stop teaching me things!

A few lessons I'm always in the process of learning:

💙 Patience. Just because I know what I'm asking doesn't mean my pet understands it yet! Why did one of the least patient people in the world choose a career that requires boatloads of patience? It's called ✨ g r o w t h ✨ and also maybe a little bit of ✨ c r a z i n e s s ✨

💙 Good training can be really boring. Sometimes the most important thing we're practicing is doing absolutely nothing! If you aren't able to dedicate time to sitting around... you're not going to be as successful with your pet. Once again, seems like a poor fit for Laura, but here we are. 🤣 I'm still learning and doing my best to sit still... sometimes.

💙 Stress looks different in every animal. Learning to recognize what stress looks like for each individual pet makes such a difference in how we train, communicate, and advocate for them. Just because a cat looks calm doesn't mean they aren't seconds away from giving you a 1-2 punch across the face. A dog that is sniffing the ground might be checking out a good smell, but it also might be a displacement behavior

That last one is especially important when we're training therapy animals AND adventure pets too. Our pets can't tell us in words when they're uncomfortable, so we have to learn to listen in other ways.

I think one of my favorite things about training is that no matter how much experience you have, every animal has something new to teach you.

If your pet isn't listening, make it easier.

This is one of the most important things to remember when you're introducing something new, whether that's a Halloween decoration, a doorbell, a crowded store, or an environment you're hoping to visit someday as a therapy animal-handler team.

Pay attention to what your pet is telling you. Can they eat and engage with you? Can they respond to something they already know? Can they investigate the weird thing and then move on? If not, "keep exposing them until they get used to it" isn't my next move.

Instead, change something. Add distance, lower the volume or intensity, shorten the session, find a quieter environment, use better rewards, or try an easier version. Then see what your pet tells you.

Training for real life means teaching our pets that we'll help them navigate the weird stuff, not just throwing them into situations they're not ready to handle. That's especially important when we're preparing for therapy animal work, because I want my animals to trust that I'll listen when they tell me something is too hard.

October gives us SO MUCH weird stuff to practice with, which is exactly why we're using our Halloween Training Challenge inside the KCAT Club to work on Calm in Chaos all month long.

THANK YOU, WESTFIELD! 💙

I had such a fun time at Barktoberfest yesterday!

I loved getting to meet so many of you, hear about your pets, and talk about what you're working toward together. We talked about everything from therapy animal goals to the everyday stuff that can make life with our pets easier and more fun.

Events like Barktoberfest are a pretty good reminder that training isn't supposed to live in your living room.

We want our pets to be able to come out into the world with us. We want to understand what they're telling us when something is hard, help them through new experiences, and build the kind of communication and trust that lets us keep doing more together.

For some Adventure Teams, that eventually means therapy animal work. For others, it means festivals, travel, errands, hiking, patios, or simply having a pet who can comfortably be part of more of your life.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth, played along, talked training with me, and welcomed King's Creatures to Westfield!

Halloween is WEIRD when you're a pet.

Suddenly there are 12-foot skeletons in your neighborhood. Things move in people's yards that did not move yesterday. Humans put strange things on their heads. The doorbell rings over and over. Tiny people in costumes appear on the porch demanding candy.

Honestly, our pets are pretty tolerant of us!

That's also what makes October such a fun month for training.

Every weird decoration, costume, sound, visitor, and change in routine gives us another opportunity to learn something about our pets and help them practice navigating real life.

For future therapy animals, this stuff matters even more. Therapy animal work is full of people who look, sound, smell, and move differently than what our pets encounter at home.

So all month long, I'm going to be sharing Halloween training tips here!

Meanwhile, inside the KCAT Club, we're taking it a step further with an entire Halloween Training Challenge focused on Calm in Chaos. Members have a full month of little training challenges designed to help their pets notice weird things, recover, and reconnect with them.

First question for everyone:

What's something completely ordinary that YOUR pet thinks is extremely spooky? 👻

One event down, one more to go!

Doggie Con is officially behind us, which means I’m turning around and getting ready for Barktoberfest this Saturday!

I’ll be there to talk about therapy animals, adventure pets, real-world training, and how much the human half of your Adventure Team matters too.

Whether your goal is therapy work, patio lunches, travel, community events, or simply having a pet who can handle more of life with you, training isn’t just about what your pet knows.

It’s about what YOU know, too.

Come find me at Barktoberfest this Saturday, October 3, from 11am-2pm at Asa Bales Park in Westfield! There will be pet-related vendors, an agility course, costume contests, adoptable pets, games, and more, with proceeds benefiting the Humane Society for Hamilton County (Indiana)!

I’m also currently accepting new consultation clients in Hamilton County and North Indianapolis, so if you’ve been thinking about getting some help with your pet, come say hi and let’s talk about your goals!
