‼️LOST DOG TIPS AND ADVICE‼️
When a dog gets loose, we as owners will often chase after them, call repeatedly, and search randomly. Sometimes this can cause a frightened dog to run farther or avoid people; even people they know. When a dog is scared, they may not always immediately recognize their family.
If your dog is missing, here are a few helpful tips as well as some resources.
Though this information talks mostly about canines - hopefully this can be useful to anyone who may have lost a cat, rabbit, bird, or any other creature.
STEP 1: Gather Information ✍🏼
Gathering information is especially helpful to already have on hand if you reach out to professional volunteers - these are some questions they may ask you, and good to make note of!
- Where/when the dog escaped and was last seen
- Temperament, fear, reactivity, prey drive & flight behavior
- Normal routines, travel patterns & familiar locations
- Food motivation and previous escape behavior
- Collar, tags & microchip information
STEP 2: Figure Out Search Area 🗺️
Think about likely hiding spots and travel routes, while considering current sightings.
Check out areas local to you; think under cars, in garages, under decks and porches, trails and waterway areas, locations associated with food or people that your dog may be used to.
STEP 4: Tracking, monitoring 🔍
Use confirmed sightings and cameras when you can!
Asking neighbors if they have seen anything on security cameras, or checking out trail cameras can be useful.
STEP 5: Community outreach and reaching out to lost pet professionals! 🛜
Think about missing posters, posting in local community pages, drone services, posting on NextDoor, reaching out to neighbors and businesses, checking with animal shelters and animal control, checking with vets and microchip companies.
There may even be local K9 lost pet trackers available to help!

**Disclaimer: I am sure there are way more organizations that I did not list that are wonderful in this scenarios; these are the ones I am personally aware of! If you know of other ones, feel free to comment to help other owners!
Now here is something to think about: Training for a scenario like this, and putting a plan in place. You may have a very well trained dog, but sometimes fireworks or something else spooky may cause a fight or flight reaction within your dog.
Think about microchipping your dog and proofing a recall when under pressure.
I always advise that when your dog is outside or on a walk, you should have them wearing some sort of tag with contact information - whether it’s on a flat collar, harness or other!
