A common question I hear is, “How much coat should a Finnish Lapphund have?”
The better question is: “Is the coat doing its job?”
A correct Finnish Lapphund coat is a functional working coat, developed to help the breed thrive in harsh Nordic conditions. It insulates against cold, sheds moisture and debris, supports natural temperature regulation, and changes with the seasons as needed.
A coat in full winter bloom may look dramatically different from the same dog during a seasonal shed, but both can be completely correct. Coat volume alone doesn’t determine quality. Texture, structure, density, and function matter far more than appearance.
This infographic highlights some of the ways a proper coat works for the dog—not just how it looks to us.
As always, remember that Finnish Lapphunds are a natural working breed. Their coats were designed for purpose first and beauty follows function.
