July has been a whirlwind! 🐾

If you've noticed I've been a little quiet on here lately, it's because this month has been packed. Every summer, many of my former training dogs come back for a visit, and having them all together is always one of the highlights of the year.

On top of that, I've also had Gracie, a service dog puppy, here working hard on her training. Between helping Gracie build her skills and enjoying visits from all these wonderful former trainees, it's been a very full—and very rewarding—month.

As much as I love keeping everyone updated, social media has taken a bit of a back seat while I've focused on the dogs.

Thank you for your patience and continued support! I can't wait to get back to sharing more updates, photos, and behind-the-scenes moments with you. In the meantime, enjoy this photo of some of the amazing dogs that have been making my July so busy—and so much fun! ❤️🐶

It's that time of year when many families are bringing home new puppies for the summer!

This is Ibby, who's here for board training. Like most puppies, she's busy, curious, and always looking for something to investigate and chew on. That's why good management is so important.

Puppy-proof your home by putting away shoes, cords, remotes, and other tempting items. Keep medications, cleaners, plants, and food out of reach, and make sure your puppy has safe chew toys. Use crates, exercise pens, and baby gates to limit access when you can't supervise. They're not a punishment—they're one of the best ways to keep your puppy safe while they learn.

A little management now goes a long way toward preventing problems, now and later. 🐾

Since arriving last week, Gracie has been busy exploring hula hoops, a ramp, a grate, and a variety of different surfaces. She’s been a champ—confidently walking over everything and even choosing to sit on the ramp! 🐾
Exposure to novel objects and surfaces is especially important for puppies because it helps build confidence during a critical stage of development. Positive experiences now teach puppies that new things are safe, helping them grow into calm, adaptable dogs who can handle unfamiliar environments with confidence.

🐾 Special Introduction 🐾

Meet Gracie, BK9’s newest service dog candidate.
At just 14 weeks old, Gracie has been carefully selected as a succession candidate for my client who unexpectedly lost her exceptional service dog, Oscar, this past October. Oscar was truly one of a kind, and his loss was deeply felt. ❤️

While Gracie will not be trained for weight-bearing mobility tasks, she will learn to retrieve items, assist with daily activities, accompany her handler to therapy and medical appointments, and provide the comfort, confidence, and partnership that service dogs so uniquely offer.

Gracie won't replace Oscar, nor is she meant to. Instead, it's the beginning of a new chapter—one built on the foundation he helped create.
Welcome to the BK9 family, Gracie. We can't wait to watch you grow into the partner you're meant to be. 🐶✨

A recall isn't finished just because the dog made it back to you.
One thing I work on early is collar handling as part of the recall process. After all, the goal isn't for your dog to run back, collect their paycheck, and immediately run away again.
In this video, I'm working with a puppy and showing how I start building a positive association with a hand reaching toward the collar or harness. I begin by rewarding comfort with the reach itself, then gradually progress to touching and briefly holding the collar before rewarding.
I keep these sessions short and easy, weaving them into everyday interactions so the puppy learns that hands near their collar are predictable and positive.
This isn't a minor detail in recall training. There may be times when you need to grab your dog's collar quickly for safety, to prevent them from running into danger, or during an unexpected emergency. If the dog is comfortable with that handling, you're much more likely to have a smooth response when it matters most.
A reliable recall isn't just "come." It's "come, stay connected, and allow handling"—because real life doesn't always end with a treat and a perfect training setup.

A few snapshots from Memorial Day at Birklandshire K9 🇺🇸🐾
One question I get asked often is why I only offer boarding to previous training clients whose dogs have excellent social skills.
The answer is simple: I want every dog in my care to be safe, comfortable, and successful.
As the sole trainer here, I’ve already spent time getting to know these dogs—their personalities, behavior, and individual needs. That familiarity allows me to provide a positive, low-stress boarding experience where each dog is set up to do well.
Boarding at Birklandshire K9 is an extension of my training program, not a separate service. By only boarding dogs I’ve trained and know well, I can maintain the level of care, safety, and individual attention that matters most.
🐾 Quality over quantity, always.

Throwback to my last pine straw project with a full crew of “helpers”. About to tackle the kennel today — not sure I’m inviting the helpers this round. 🐾
