❤️‍🩹 COCO UPDATE ❤️‍🩹

Some days are good days for Coco...and some days are still really, REALLY hard.

There are days when she eats every bite of her new favorite food (courtesy of the wonderful Christie Willett-Naquin at Waggin Meals and of course her new favorite human Mike Blalock ) and looks up at us with that sweet little face. Her head is held high. She follows us around. She wants love.Those are the days we wish we could freeze in time!

Then there are the other days...

Days when Coco refuses a meal. Days when getting up takes everything she has. Days when her walk is slower and every step looks harder. Days when she doesn't hold her head high because resting it on a pillow is simply easier.

On those days, she sleeps.

She rests.

And we let her little body tell us what it needs.

The videos we're sharing with this update show what Coco's walking can look like on her GOOD days. On her harder days, she is even slower and getting up and moving is visibly more difficult.

Coco is now on chronic pain medication, and we've learned more about just how much damage this tiny 5-pound girl has been living with.

She has been diagnosed with multiple areas of spinal fusion around the hunched portion of her back, including near her shoulders/upper spine.

After hearing what was happening with her spine, we started trying to understand what that actually meant and reading about the possible causes was heartbreaking.

Spinal fusion and new bone formation can develop when the body is responding to chronic instability or damage in the spine. Trauma can be one cause... and in Coco's case, given her history and overall physical condition when she came to us, there is significant concern about what her little body may have endured.

We weren't there when Coco's injuries occurred, so we will never claim to know exactly what happened to her.

But we do know this:

The condition Coco arrived in did not happen overnight.

Her nails didn't become embedded in her paws overnight.

Her severe infections didn't develop overnight.

Her body didn't become this neglected overnight.

And the damage we're now discovering tells an even bigger story about just how long this little girl needed someone to help her.

Coco is our hardest story so far.

Taking cases like hers isn't easy on the soul. There is a heaviness that comes with caring for an animal who has suffered this much. There are tears. There is anger. There are moments when you look at her and wonder how anyone could have allowed her to get this bad!

And sometimes the hardest part is seeing one of the healthy, happy babies in our care run across the room... and then looking back at Coco.

It reminds us all over again just how sick she really is.

But Coco is here.

She's safe.

She's loved.

And we're going to keep fighting for every good day we can give her. ❤️‍🩹

Coco will require ongoing veterinary care and medication, potentially for the rest of her life. Anna's Hope Veterinary Clinic has been helping us tremendously throughout this journey, and every donation toward Coco helps us continue supporting the veterinary care that is keeping her comfortable and giving her a chance.
