We don't have time every day to go on distant adventures to fun trails...and that's okay! Enrichment is about utilizing as many senses as possible.
🌱 Yesterday we took the dogs to one of our favorite open fields to run and get that burst of energy out. The sun was shining, the grass had that fresh cut smell.
🐶 Mowgly and Walter would run towards me and past me, so as to say a quick hello and goodbye. Every time they'd pass, I'd get down on their level and pretend to chase them or give a woohoo! 🎉 to share in their excitement. They both expressed their contentment with great affection as their breathing grew heavy and they were ready for a break.
🌱Jude (5) and I got them some water and decided to then take them for a walk through the surrounding neighborhood where we don't walk too often. It was great fun to watch as the dogs sniffed every plant, rolled on various grasses, said hello to folks watching from their porch and take in all that was offered in this different area.

How often do we go for walks in the same neighborhood for the sake of convenience? 🤔
👍There's value in walking your own neighborhood, but if you go a few blocks over and walk a new area, imagine the new scenery and smells for your pup! You've now created an adventure without going far at all!

Have you ever wondered...what's the real meaning of enrichment?

Why do licking mats and puzzle toys get labeled as enrichment?

The industry saw an opportunity and ran with it, but do we need their definition?

Our dogs know what true enrichment looks like!

And the amazing thing is, it benefits them in so many ways:

True enrichment fulfills on many levels and doesn't leave them wanting.
Puzzle toys have their place, but let's not confuse them with true enrichment.

This paw cleaner is really easy to use. I had just cleaned the house and the dogs had mud on their paws. I squirted some on each paw, wiped it off and they were ready to come back inside. With so much happening every day, it can feel an impossible target to have it all.
We're here to remind you that perfect is not a requirement.
The hike you're looking at was thrown together last minute. We had no idea where we were going. I was not sure how I was going to manage all three of my kids plus four dogs (1 not pictured).
There is something to be said for throwing caution to the wind and trusting the process.
I selected a trail I was semi-familiar with on my Google maps. I ended up at a completely different trail than I had expected! But the world payed us back with a beautiful view and a lovely hike. We found the most amazing climbing tree. I sat with the dogs in the shade while the kids climbed.
We breathed in fresh air. Not a single one of us left there thinking about any of the many reasons I could have come up with to not go on this hike today.
Perfectly imperfect!

I learned of Jane Goodall passing away yesterday and my heart instantly broke. For me, she holds a place in my heart along with Steve Irwin (the croc hunter) and a few other inspiring people in the world of animal awareness and advocacy. If you are aware of what an amazing person she was, I'm sure you feel the same.
Aside from simply being a lovely person, she was an advocate for nature, a passionate conservationist, a primatologist, an anthropologist, an advocate for human rights, animal welfare, species and environmental protection and so much more to many people.
She was 91 at her passing and spent the last 6 decades studying chimps (she lived among them in Tanzania for 20 years!) and bringing awareness of their similarities to us as humans, as soulful beings with similar behaviors to humans. I wish I had a chance to hear her speak or meet her in person. Her legacy lives on and one thing to know about her, is that with all of her years of studying chimps, she still said her favorite animal was dogs ❤️. "Chimps are too much like humans", she said.

May she rest in peace 🕊️
