One More Reason to Spay Your Female Dog ❤️
Meet Chloe. She came into our rescue this past April at just seven years old, and she was very pregnant.
Female dogs who are not spayed and have had multiple litters can face an increased risk of mammary tumors, some of which are cancerous. Spaying is an important part of protecting your female dog’s health, and it can significantly reduce the risk of mammary cancer when performed at the appropriate time.
Chloe was a wonderful mama. She nursed her puppies for well over nine weeks, which isn’t unusual for a devoted mother, especially among small breeds. Her puppies were about 12 weeks old when Chloe was finally spayed. Most of her milk had dried up, and she was healing nicely from her surgery. She was also getting a little chunky from sneaking everyone else’s leftovers!
Then her foster noticed something concerning. After Chloe’s surgical incision had healed, three small lumps were discovered between her ni***es.
Next week, Chloe will undergo a biopsy. We are praying these lumps turn out to be benign tumors or cysts. We’ve seen mammary cancer take the lives of dogs we love, and naturally, we’re worried about this sweet little girl.
Chloe deserves a chance at a happy, healthy life.
She will be available for adoption once we receive her biopsy results and understand what lies ahead for her.
If the results reveal cancer, Chloe will need a hospice foster. Someone willing to open their heart and home to her, surround her with love, and make whatever time she has left the very best it can be. Whether that time is long or short, she deserves to know the comfort and security of being someone’s beloved family member.
We hope and pray that Chloe’s story has a happy ending. ❤️
But her story is also a reminder of why spaying matters. Unplanned litters put enormous demands on a dog’s body, and leaving a female dog unspayed can expose her to preventable reproductive health risks.
Please spay your female dogs. Don’t wait until an unexpected pregnancy or a frightening diagnosis forces you to think about the consequences.
And please keep Chloe in your thoughts as she faces her biopsy. This little girl has given so much as a mama. Now it’s her turn to be cared for. ❤️🐾
