“Why is my trainer telling me to get rid of my harness and retractable leash???”
Harnesses typically distribute pressure & weight evenly when paired with a retractable leash you have minimal to no control. “Yes my vet said it wouldn’t cause any injuries but my dog is still pulling”
Harnesses can cause extreme joint strain, because they distribute pressure so well. it encourages pulling and when paired with a retractable leash, timing for redirection is very off. leading to reactivity, risk for dog fights and more.
When explaining to an owner why harnesses won’t work, I want them to think about what sled dogs use..
they use harnesses. they distribute pressure evenly making it much easier to pull a sled.
when pulling it puts stress on back leg joints, shoulders, and more.
sled dogs are extremely important for the people who use them, but we don’t want a house pet impersonating a sled dog 😉
retractable or “flexi” leashes, have been the culprit of many injuries, and dog fights.. The lock button not working, having 8+ feet to roam, not being able to get your dog back in your space after learning the other dog wasn’t so friendly…
it is extremely important a dog can learn and respect walking by your side on a regular 6ft leash.
you have about 3ft of “normal” leash material, the rest is comparable to cheese wire. this can also lead to serious owner injuries if your dog circles you then puts tension on the leash, your dog is running after something but you can’t lock it and you need to try to pull them back.
owners shouldn’t have to worry about these things! They should be able to enjoy a good walk!
It is important to teach early on giving to pressure, so your dog respects and understands how walking on leash should be.

🐾 Socialization Sunday 🐾

Let’s talk about what socialization actually means.

Socialization does NOT mean:
• Letting your dog meet every dog
• Playing with every dog at the park
• Greeting every person on a walk
• Constant stimulation

True socialization means teaching your dog how to be calm and neutral in the presence of the world around them.

It means:
• Walking past other dogs without reacting
• Sitting calmly while people move around
• Observing new environments without becoming overwhelmed
• Trusting their human to handle the situation

A well-socialized dog is not the most outgoing dog in the room.
It’s the dog who can calmly coexist.

Many reactivity issues start when dogs are taught that they are responsible for every interaction. When we shift that responsibility back to the handler and teach neutrality instead, dogs relax.

Confidence grows.
Anxiety decreases.
Behavior improves.

This week, instead of focusing on how many interactions your dog has… focus on how calmly they can observe the world.

Calm exposure > chaotic exposure.
