๐ฅถโ๏ธ WINTER IS COMING... and the outdoor cats need our help! ๐ฑ๐
Did you know that outdoor and feral cats need extra protection when the temperatures drop? But they donโt need anything fancy or expensive! You can build them a cozy, life-saving shelter in just one afternoon using a simple plastic storage tub, some foam insulation, and a bit of straw. ๐ ๏ธ๐ฆ
Here is your step-by-step guide to making a winter shelter that actually keeps them warm (and why you should NEVER use blankets!):
1๏ธโฃ Insulate it! Line a lidded plastic tub with foam board on all sides. ๐ฆ
2๏ธโฃ Straw only! ๐พ Crucial tip: Never use blankets, towels, or hayโthey absorb moisture from the air and the cat's breath, which will freeze and make them colder. Straw is loose, sheds moisture, and allows cats to burrow! ๐ซ๐
3๏ธโฃ Doorway: Cut a 6-inch door a few inches above the ground to keep snow out. ๐ช
4๏ธโฃ Elevate: Elevate it on a pallet or bricks to keep the cold ground from stealing their heat. ๐งฑ
5๏ธโฃ Placement: Face the door away from the wind or against a wall. ๐ฌ๏ธ๐งฑ
6๏ธโฃ Feed outside: Keep food and water nearby, but NEVER inside the shelter (spilled water will freeze and ruin their warm space!). ๐ฒ๐ง
๐ Bonus Tip: Small is warmer! Don't make the shelter too big. They need their own body heat to warm the space, so a smaller tub is perfect for 2 to 3 cats to huddle up.
Let's keep our neighborhood felines safe and warm this winter! ๐พโค๏ธ
