A good bird dog is worth watching. Especially one who missed it so much while she was on maternity leave.

Yesterday, Avis and I had the opportunity to guide a pheasant hunt for a group from the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers.

Heavy cover, fall colors, and a setter doing what she was bred to do.

One of my favorite parts of the upland community is sharing the experience with people who appreciate the dogs, the habitat, and the work that goes into a day afield.

And judging by the burrs we brought home, Avis had a heck of a time.

Banjo, reared by the one and only Lightning Flash English Setters had a banner day securing a Max Score of 112 Prize 1 in his NAVHDA Natural Ability test today hosted by the Finger Lakes NAVHDA.

He managed to juggle a pheasant and a wild woodcock during his track!

This little man is something else! I can’t wait to see how he develops through this season.

I’m sure he’s ready for test season to be over and hunting season to start!

These are going to be dogs with drive, hunting homes are preferred. But both dogs have an incredible off switch in the house.

For the record - everyone is fine. Someone decided to eat part of his silicone bowl then throw up an ungodly amount and a piece of it came up…. So out of an abundance of caution we got X-rays.
