Even at temps as low as 75* (our current temp in Bryan, Texas) the humidity is at 89% pushing a ride into the danger zone if proper steps to cool them down are not taken. A yearly reminder from all of us at PPH.

Remembering the fallen on Memorial Day from Powell Performance Horses! Melrose and Rocker proudly wore their Stars and Stripes today and rode better than EVER before, in their lesson with Tommy. She is ready for her reining camp in north Texas next weekend and we think she’s ready for short stirrup classes at the NRHA level. You should have seen those lead changes!

How to teach a foundation of good equitation practices to young children. Part 1
Some tips and tricks!
Number one, equitation is way more than looks. It’s the base of safe riding. The starting point. As an instructor we are obligated to give all of our students the necessary tools to be safe and competent (and competitive). Begin your young riders, with a leg that is flexible and stirrups that are the correct length. They need to have their heels down to feel secure in the saddle. All of my riders begin in a dressage saddle. Whether they go on to do western events or other English events. Stirrups should come to the ankle bone to allow them to flex the heel down. But it doesn’t stop there. The toe needs to be forward. Being able to articulate the foot this way allows the rider to close the KNEE. When a rider hangs on with their heels with toes out instead of forward, usage of spurs is delayed. It’s only when a rider has full control of their lower leg, that spurs should ever be considered, and this takes TIME. When a young child softens their tummy and stretches their heel down, a deeper seat can be achieved and more confidence and security follows. The reins are to be held with fingers closed and thumbs on top. Hands are hip width and in front of the saddle. No limp wrists. We emphasize the elbow. No locked arms. The elbow, like the knee must be flexible. Moving up the body, explain that shoulders are back. We don’t slouch. We open the chest and let our arms rest against our sides.
If a rider is stiff or forgets to breathe, encourage them to relax their jaw, speak or sing to their horse, and most of all, keep it upbeat. We forget how many moving parts are involved in riding. These children are taking on a very big task. Controlling a horse while maintaining balance and correct form.
We are not here to give pony rides. We are teaching a sport that requires focus, flexibility, and balance. It’s an art.

Today’s the day our Anni graduates from A&M Consolidated High School! Then she begins her countdown to beginning at West Texas A&M University as an incoming freshman majoring In Ag Communications in the fall! She and Pablo will be going to college TOGETHER as members of their collegiate Ranch Horse team and we can’t express how proud we are. Anni began riding with Tommy six years ago and has been dedicated, involved and passionate about her horses from the start. She is confident, calm and capable and the team is BLESSED to have her and her amazing horse with them! Anni you make everyone laugh, feel included and we are going to miss you so much! The sky is the limit! Congratulations on everything you’ve done and looking ahead to what’s to come!

Happy Mother’s Day to every kind of mama out there — the ones raising babies, bottle-feeding foals, loving fur babies, caring for animals, and giving their whole heart every single day. 🌸🐴🐶🐱

Whether your children walk on two legs or four, the love, sacrifice, patience, and care you give never goes unnoticed. Today we celebrate the women who nurture, protect, and love unconditionally.

To all the moms of kids, horses, dogs, cats, and every animal in between — we hope your day is filled with love, happiness, and maybe a little extra peace and quiet. 💕 Happy Mother’s Day!

We are so proud of Powell Performance Horses Alumni, Edie Dugger for her outstanding performance and big win as the Crockett Lions Club Rodeo Queen! She and her grandma Diane Holman have come to take lessons together for years and she has blossomed into such an amazing rider. George her gelding is loving life as a rodeo horse (he’s a reiner😉) but who wouldn’t ?! We are so proud of you Edie!!! We love to help rodeo queens prepare. If you have your eyes set on a crown in the future, we can get your horsemanship up to par and then some.

Go Melrose go! Rocker and Melrose are getting ready for a very special camp at the end of May and want to fine tune their reining maneuvers! Melrose has a natural ability, bravery and an independent seat already! She’s going to show everyone how it’s done at camp! Tommy is very proud of both of you!

Huge congratulations to Nicole McMillion on her huge comeback with Freddy. Freddy injured himself away from home last year in a freak accident. With endless hours of meticulous rehabilitation Nicole brought Freddy back from what could have been a career ending injury. Nicole balances a full schedule as a Texas A&Am student, being a team member on TAMU Equestrian Team (Nationally ranked, SEC champions) along with daily care of Freddy that brings her here at 5am most mornings. Her work ethic is insane truly, and we are in awe of her! So happy for her and Freddy. So well deserved.
