This is actually not the sad post I planned for today- because less than 24 hours after saying goodbye to one cat, we were saying goodbye to another: Orion. 💔

By the time Orion came to us today, he was emaciated, covered in f***s, severely congested, and his tail was so severely damaged that the skin had begun separating from the bone. Our friends first told us about him, and they committed to finding and trapping Orion so he could get the help he so badly needed.

He had an ear tip - indicating he had been neutered and return to the street at some point as a community, feral cat - but within 30 seconds of meeting Orion, I knew he was friendly. I also knew he was suffering.

Many cats living on the street did not start there. Some were once pets whose people moved, became sick, lost housing, could no longer afford care, or disappeared from their lives. Cats being cats, adapt until they can’t anymore.

This is the part of community cat life people don’t see. They are not scrappy survivors. They weren’t built for outdoor urban life. But this is also what life outside can look like in NYC — especially for senior cats. Bodies slowly giving out and illnesses going untreated can lead to a slow demise (or, a fast one).

Orion was someone’s pet once. We will never know, but somehow he ended up living - and slowly dying - on the street.

WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE so that cats like Orion don’t end up on the street?

Ask your city council member to include funding for spay neuter and pet food pantries in the fy27 budget.

🚨JOSIE UPDATE - FOSTER NEEDED!
It’s been a scary 48 hours for Josie - the cat that was placed on the sidewalk in a milk crate outside of a local bodega. Since visiting where she finally had those painful mats shaved off, Josie has been waiting in a crate for a foster home. She is scared and a little shut down - can you blame her ?

🚨🚨🚨Josie is one of several cats in need of a Josie is one of MANY CATS in need of foster as we head into Memorial Day weekend🚨🚨🚨With so many people traveling, we’re losing temporary foster homes faster than we can replace them, and cats who should be settling into safety are instead facing uncertainty. Without foster homes, this also means saying no to rescue requests and no to helping the next cat or kitten in need.

Dwayne the Rock Johnson has grown up to be the cat we raised him to be. 🖤 He’s been feeling a overlooked by adopters so we had a little photoshoot with his foster so to make sure his dating profile really pops.

Dwayne is around nine months old and his full government name is Bay Crane Dwayne the Rock Johnson. Son of Bay Crane Jane and cousin to Bay Crane Little Wayne.

He is ready for adoption to a home with another cat or kitten !

Today we heard about a friendly cat who had shown up at a local sanitation site - a place where far too many cats have shown up, seemingly abandoned. We rushed over immediately to get him.

Our friends saw him right away. He isn’t neutered, isn’t microchipped, and clearly doesn’t belong out there alone. He needs a name and a foster home ASAP.

FOSTERS NEEDED!

The fish kittens - Guppy, Minnow, Tetra, Betta, and Mollie - are ready for foster homes, along with many other cats and kittens in our care !

More than anything, we need fosters who understand the level of commitment these cats require.

Fostering is incredibly rewarding, but it is not always easy. Some cats need medications, socialization, quarantine, frequent vet visits, or weeks/months of patience before they are ready for adoption. Emergencies happen. Plans change. Kittens get sick.

We are specifically looking for fosters who have prior cat/kitten fostering experience - or are committed to learning!

Clam Chowder and Broccoli Cheddar are two sisters with two very different futures.

Rescued right before a snowstorm with their mama, French Onion, these two six-month old tabbies were supposed to be on the same path on their way to forever homes.

But while Broccoli grew, Clam remained tiny beside her sister (swipe to see the size difference). This was the first sign of a serious heart condition that a visit to the cardiologist would later reveal. Clammy has a very large hole in her heart—a severe ventricular septal defect. This is not something that can be fixed, only managed, and we know that Clam’s little life will come to a premature end. 💔

We were devastated by this diagnosis and decided to give Clam the very best life, for whatever time she has left. She’s in fospice with getting daily medications, soaking up the love, and making friends with the resident cats.

And her sister?

Broccoli Cheddar is thriving. She’s healthy, playful, and increasingly independent. In a home with both her sister and other cats, she has grown increasingly independent, forming new friendships and ready for a forever home of her own.

We’ll be sharing a lot more about both Clam and Broccoli in the days do come, and you can also follow their foster

So here’s the ask:

🥦If you’re looking to open your home to a kitten friend to your current cat, Broccoli Cheddar is ready. Or we can pair her with another cat or kitten.

❤️And if you have room in your heart, please send some love to little Clam Chowder, and consider opening your home to a special needs cat or kitten.

This is Tadpole. He is one week old today and it’s time we introduced you.

Tadpole was the first born of a litter of four, the mother still a kitten herself who struggled through labor over an agonizing 36 hours. Two kittens did not survive.

From the start, Tadpole struggled to nurse, and bottle feeding wasn’t going well either, with milk constantly coming through his nose. He was hungry but unable to eat and we were sick with worry, so we turned to our friend and neonate expert Maggie of for help. That’s when we discovered our little Tadpole had been born with a cleft palate: a congenital opening in the roof of the mouth that leaves kittens unable to properly nurse.

Thankfully, Maggie was able to take him within hours of this discovery and begin round-the- clock tube feeding - delivering formula directly into his esophagus through a feeding tube.

In kittens this tiny, a cleft palate can be devastating, and many kittens do not survive long enough to reach the age where corrective surgery is even possible.

But Tadpole is still here and we aren’t giving up. Tube feeding is a specialized skill and we are lucky enough to know a few heroes who have volunteered to take shifts to give our little guy a chance. This weekend he’s with and from there, to another neonate caregiver without whose help we would be lost.

Please keep our little Tadpole in your thoughts. Updates to come. 🐸
