If you’ve been around for a bit on my socials, you’ll recognize my yellow lab bestie, Leo 🥰

He was just a puppy a few years ago when we worked on alllllll the basics including off leash reliability in his yard. He’s been doing fantastic….until a new friend moved in next door 😂

A social reward is a really really big temptation! After he decided to go play with his bestie a few times unexpectedly…mom said “back to school!” and re-enrolled him for my Homeschool Program.

We have been working for the last month on creating a “green light” cue that indicates when it’s okay for him to leave & play, reinforcing HEAVY when he offers to come back mid-play on his own, and also just hanging out on the property line to make this temptation a bit more boring.

As you can see he is doing fantastic! Proud of my buddy as always.

The next program opening is for September!! 🍂 perfect for the back to school chaos…😉

⚠️

🚨 Air Quality Alert for Southeast Michigan 🚨

With wildfire smoke affecting our region, air quality has reached hazardous levels. If you have pets, taking a few extra precautions today can help protect their health.

🐾 Keep outdoor time short.
Limit walks to quick potty breaks, then head back inside.

❤️ Watch higher-risk pets closely.
Extra caution is recommended for pets that are:
• Overweight
• Living with heart or lung conditions (including heartworm disease or asthma)
• Flat-faced breeds, like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers

👀 Know the signs.
If your pet is coughing, struggling to breathe, unusually tired, or showing any other concerning symptoms, contact your veterinarian.

😷 Protect yourself, too.
If you need to be outdoors for an extended period, consider wearing a well-fitting mask, especially if you’re sensitive to poor air quality.

The best place for both people and pets today is indoors whenever possible.

Walter & mom are starting their patio training! 😎

(Although, they’ve been working endlessly together since he was a pup….so this was pretty much a breeze for them)

We talked about the best recipe for patio hangs:
🔆 mock-practice at home! Set up our table with some lunch or yummy snacks…”suit him up” (harness and leash) and recruit family to help pretend to be the very excited random people and/or pretend servers!
🔅a mat (or a pillowcase 😉) to give a visual signal where to park himself
🔆hydration & rewards! He too needs water and snacks for being a certified good boi
🔅a new verbal cue that tells him he can greet someone! This way it’s super clear when it’s appropriate to approach humans (or not)
🔆a shady spot within the patio ☂️
🔅potty and/or sniff breaks

We were so grateful the weather is a bit more friendly this week! What are you practicing this summer with your dog(s)?! 🦮

Had to stop at my storage unit to retrieve alllllll of my stashed “grad school gold” because my 2nd research project is back in motion! We already had a couple dogs go through the study, and are actively enrolling more!

I cannot wait to publish this important work and to share it with the dog community! 🪟
