2026 Gouldian Count is about to commence.
32 volunteers are here in Wyndham to count finches and enjoy the wonderful Kimberley environment. Volunteers include 2 from England here for their ninth count, two from the USA, two from Czechia, two from Vietnam and another two from England here for the first time. Half the group are here for their first Gouldian count. Many others are old hands.

This years count follows a big wet season last summer (160% of the long term rainfall average) and there is more water at some count locations than normal. Surprisingly some springs where we have counted for years are dry.
Early indications are that there is a high % of juveniles in the population. We will see what the count brings.

Below a count site this morning.

AFA WANTS TO KNOW!

We’re continuing a conversation series Abbitt Hoffman started where we want to hear directly from aviculturists, bird owners, breeders, conservationists, and everyone who shares a passion for birds.

Each AFA Wants to Know post will ask a question about aviculture your experiences, your knowledge, the challenges we face, and the future of our community.

There are no right or wrong answers. We want to hear from you.

This weeks question:

What is the biggest misconception people have about aviculture?

Maybe it’s something you hear all the time. Maybe it’s something you wish the general public better understood. Whatever comes to mind, share your thoughts in the comments.

Your answers may help others better understand what responsible aviculture really means.

AFA Wants to Know — so tell us what you think!
