🐶 UPDATE! FOREVER HOME FOUND!
We are so excited to hear from the Good Samaritan family who found this poor girl that they were able to help find a home for her where she can be loved and get the care she needs.
When you ask how you can help rescues, shelters, & stray animals, THIS IS IT! Shelters are overflowing, rescues are overwhelmed. Fosters are full, money is low, and they cannot fix everything.
Oftentimes, the hero is YOU! Maybe a dog needs you and/or your help to either keep the animal you found or help find them a permanent situation. It’s not that a shelter or rescue doesn’t want to help the animal, it’s more that they can’t. We cannot make foster homes appear from thin air. We cannot make money fall from the sky. The burden of what to do is too easily being shifted to shelters and rescues.
🐶 Move? You already said yes to an animal. Please factor that into wherever you are headed.
🐶 Didn’t get your animal fixed? You risk contributing to the animal crisis, because life can come at you in a flash. Animals get loose (despite your best efforts), then they mate. Period. And it can happen to anyone. Spay/neuter is the ONLY way to guarantee it won’t happen. Animals don’t get knocked up. Please stop saying that. There is an amazing low-cost clinic here in town that will provide spay/neuter services for just $75. Just message us. We can help!
🐶 Didn’t get any vetting for your animal? Did you know Tractor Supply regularly hosts low-cost vaccination clinics that make it possible to provide much-needed vaccinations to protect your animal. A 12-week old puppy we were trying to help a few weeks ago died from Parvo. It is a miserable death, and $50 worth of shots from Tractor Supply would have prevented it. Parvo is rampant right now. Please do whatever you can to protect your animal.
🐶 Behavioral issues? There are so many resources available to help (like YouTube). Dive in and stick to the decision you made to get that cute puppy. Shelters and rescues are full of 1-2 year old dogs. And why? Because that is when animals get hard, and people give up. The cute puppy is now a little terrorist that needs your consistency and commitment. See it through, and you’ll have a best friend for life.
🐶 In the later stages of life? Definitely have a plan before you get a dog that could outlive you.
🐶 Have housing instability? A lot of people are sadly in the same boat. Be patient and wait to get an animal until life is more stable & certain for you.
🐶 And last but not least, the incomprehensible lack of laws & ordinances regarding breeding, animal abuse/neglect, and spay/neuter ordinances is allowing the animal crisis to spiral out of control, leading to higher unwanted animal populations & more animal suffering. This HAS to change.
Where does it end, folks? It ends with us. Calls like this come in daily. Our small little rescue had six calls over the weekend. You think rescues and shelters are the answer? They’re not. They’re the bandaid…the worn down, tired, broke bandaid that could never even scratch the surface of this problem. They most certainly can help some animals, but never all.
Change is necessary. We have to demand animal control for all counties. Bigger budgets for a growing problem. Accountability for those contributing to the ongoing crisis & those abusing animals. Spay/neuter ordinances. Education. It’s the only way.
We are incredibly grateful to the family who found this innocent girl and then did the work to find a path for her. But the battle rages on for the countless animals being dumped, abandoned, abused, and neglected.
We want to work together with everyone to help make the problem better. We are already out in the community helping families keep their pets & helping to facilitate needed care (like spay/neuter, vaccinations, flea & tick treatment, food, even simple joys like beds and bones). Stay tuned as we officially launch this community program. More info to come on how you can get involved. But it will take ALL of us to even put a dent in this.
