Another fun night with Xena. Remember a month ago when she spooked from me raising my arm up too fast? Make sure you watch the end of the video.
Some thoughts I want to share based off this video.
I’ve come to realize that Xena just goes better in a halter, she seems to have some anxiety about the bridle. When I ride her in it, she’s so tense. When I ride her in a halter, she just plods along like you see here. So we’re just doing what works and keeps her comfortable. However, I’m gonna try get my hands on a little S hackamore and try that out on her.
Secondly, this mare has already come a long way with her athleticism. Now, I’m not a mom. But I can imagine after only being mom for a while that your coordination and athleticism would take some time to get back to the way it was. You’ll see her raise her head up as she backs up. I need her to tuck her nose in, raise her back and engage her core. Instead she’s raising her head and hollowing out her back. She needs some help building that core strength. We do lots of backing up the ditch to work on this, but it’s a bit harder for her while also carrying my weight. She also would NOT lope on the lunge line before, now she can do one or two rounds, usually on the correct lead! Just something to keep in mind.
And finally, look at her being sweet at the end of the video, like “what the heck are you doing down there human?!”. Oh sweet girl. Someone take this lady home, she will be such a fun one with consistent riding.
TODAY is the final day to apply to adopt Xena or any horses in the Dakota Showdown! Get those applications in and start getting excited!!

Another great session with Xena tonight. Give this girl some love and patience and she will try just about anything for you! If any potential adopters are wanting to meet this lovely lady, I am around and free most of the weekend, please don’t hesitate to message me!

Xena tagged along to the Estelline barrel race last night. I wanted her to see all the sights and sounds and craziness. There were over 150 entries last night so there was lots of action! She got a little bit overwhelmed with all the commotion but remained easy to handle and respectful of my space. And even walked through the very scary water puddle in the parking lot 🤣

Just free standing in the trailer having supper 🥰

Xena and I have had a great past few days. She’s really thinking hard, I appreciate how she’s looking to me for reassurance when she gets nervous. This is a huge step for her! Instead of letting those flight instincts win, she’s beginning to trust me. She is still figuring out turning under saddle. You’ll see me pick up a rein and drop it back down, trying to break a foot loose when she gets stuck and then ask for forward motion again. Just needs more confidence with me being in control from the saddle instead of the ground. I love the mind set we’ve been in and feel like we have good progress this week! Now to just get her shoes reset and keep working!

Desensitization and relaxation all in one. Xena loves a good full body massage with the massage gun, here’s a short clip. Her reactions are subtle but telling. I’ve noticed some tension in the shoulders, so I’m working on freeing that up. This also helps improve blood flow. I’d imagine that muscle responsible for twitching flies gets pretty sore too, so I focus there along the back and in the shoulders to help relieve that. After this she did a big stretch and let out a yawn, followed by lots of licking and chewing. And look at that lip droop, I’m so happy to help her relax and spoil her a bit 🥰

Xena would be a great partner for a confident and consistent leader, consider adding her or one of the other horses to your herd this August 12-13.

Well “fresh” is one way to describe Xena lately. She put on a show for Spenser and the camera on Saturday, I appreciate the enthusiasm, Xena. 🤣 So time to break some things down on the ground. Such as a better bend on the lunge line, moving shoulders, ribs and hips independently. More ground driving and learning to steer and collect better. Respecting eachothers space. She does these things, but now I really want to take and refine each one. So we can both be real confident when we ride again. At 17, it may be a bit of a challenge for her, I’m sure it’s been a while since she’s been asked to carry herself this way, if ever. But it’s fun to watch her thought processes, she is SO ridiculously smart. Her personality is shining through.
And of course, we’re working on making the trailer a good experience for her. The round pen works perfect for me to backup to (thanks to Dusty & Lacey) and have a more controlled space. She moves her feet out in the round pen, then gets to rest in the trailer. She gets a little grain each day with turmeric, so she gets to have that while we stand in there too. She really needed some confidence in stepping up into, and then backing out of the trailer. And I’m starting to see that from her, I’m so excited for her!

Interested in adding Xena to your herd? She would do great with a confident and consistent handler. Check out the Dakota Showdown Horse Trainer Challenge to learn more and apply to become an approved adopter!
