This, my friends, is why you need to keep your horses on a schedule.

A barefoot horse will naturally wear down some hoof if they are constantly walking/moving (barefoot, domesticated horses, still need regular trims). Horses with shoes do not have the luxury of wearing down hoof. This horse is incredibly long, not only is it more work and time to get them back, the horse is no longer correctly aligned. The weight distribution on the hoof is completely thrown off. This causes issues with the hoof and it puts more strain on the horses: joints, tendons and ligaments. Think about walking in high heels, what would it feel like if you broke the heels off? Would it be easy to walk?

Your farrier is scheduling 6/7/8 week appointments based on the rate at which your horses hoof grows so they can avoid situations like this. They aren’t making appointments for 6-8 weeks because they want to make money, it is in your horses best interest. They may look β€œfine” to you at 6 weeks but the difference between 6 and 8 weeks to your horse is significant.

(No bad comments towards the owner, just a good opportunity to show how important regular appointments are)

β€œThe foot is the foundation of the horse, and a structure is only as strong and stable as its foundation. Hence, the old adage β€œNo foot, no horse.”
The foot is the most common area of forelimb lameness because of the amount of strain and stress this unique structure area is exposed to. The more you understand about the equine foot, the more problems you may be to avoid and identify early on.”
