I was fortunate enough to have Westbay Animal Hospital in Bradenton let me team up with them and use their clinic for a neat surgery on a ten day old calf. They are a great team and great group of people! This little girl had an infected umbilical cord with a remnant of tissue that extended to the bladder. The tissue was able to be removed surgically and one of her joints was also flushed because it became septic from the infection. Thanks Westbay!

Interstatelivestock.com is a great resource to check requirements of state of destination for livestock transport. I use this frequently or I call the state directly and ask questions. Remember, male cattle over 12 months old often need a test called trichomoniasis testing prior to shipping. While some states make exceptions if they are just going for a show but then coming right back, it is still a good idea to plan on health papers at least a week in advance of date of travel so there is time for any needed testing.

I want to preface this statement by saying that we have a great professional livestock auction barn in our area that I’ve used myself to sell calves. However, in general livestock auction barns are a poor place to purchase new animals to start your farming/ranching endeavors. I have had many new homesteaders or hobby farmers contacting me lately with very ill animals that have brought infectious diseases onto their premises and infected other animals. In many cases, multiple animals have died.If You are searching for a source of poultry or livestock to start your farm, there are plenty of other good sources that I’m happy to link you up with and provide testing for infectious disease prior to purchasing.
