Shedding season is right around the corner! 🌸

However, you notice that your equine friend is clinging to their winter coat longer than they should, it might be time to give your veterinarian a call — especially if your animal is 15+.

A long haircoat that fails to shed according to normal seasonal patterns is the most classic sign of Equine Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), also known as Cushing’s disease. This disorder of the pituitary gland results in hormonal imbalances and is one of the most common diseases of middle-aged and geriatric equines.

Early diagnosis and treatment are key to helping animals with PPID live long, happy lives. Without treatment, symptoms tend to worsen over time, and many equines are euthanized as a consequence of laminitis, recurrent foot abscesses or complications related to bacterial infections.

It is also important to note that donkeys and mules tend to shed later than horses, so keep this in mind before getting too worried about other underlying causes. As always, if you have concerns about if your equine companion is shedding appropriately, contact your veterinarian.

Monday 3/16 - Given the forecast for potentially severe storms for Monday, our office will close at 2pm. Office staff will be available on the phones (remotely, as long as power & internet are available) until 4, and our vet on call will be available for emergencies.

If appointments need to be rescheduled we will reach out to you directly.

If you need to pick up medications or stop by the office please plan to do so before 2pm.

It may not feel like it today, but spring IS coming!

It's time to check the date on your horse's Coggins if you plan to travel or show this spring. Please make sure you give yourself (and us) time to get a new one if yours is expired.

It's also a great time to check over your records and make sure all information is up to date. If you have an address change, need to update your horse's registered/show name, or microchip number we can scan it and save the number to their medical records.

If you would like to get your horse microchipped, we can do that as well.

Microchips are small, safe, inexpensive forms of permanent identification.

It's almost the end of the season for Sailing Through the Winter Sailing Through The Winter Solstice on Carroll Creek in Frederick, MD and we're hoping to boost the donations to our boat, the Zodiac, created to help the horse at Days End Farm Horse Rescue. The dancing unicorn braved the cold today to walk along Carroll Creek and check out the ice sculptures, especially the horse sculpture for Days End Farm Horse Rescue. In case no one has told you today- you're doing great, your horses definitely appreciate you, and warmer weather is coming!

We hope your coffee is hot and bottomless, that your socks don't bunch up in your boots, the hay bits don't end up in itchy places and that everyone eats, drinks and poos like they are supposed to.

Do you want to see a fabulous lighted boat display and help some rescue horses in need? Head to Frederick, Maryland and take a walk along Carroll Creek to see some of the 27 ships in the water and when you're done, go to Sailing Through the Winter Solstice website online and scroll down to Vote for the 2025-26 Fleet (Especially for Zodiac and Days End Farm Horse Rescue). All of your votes add up to donations for each boat's sponsored charity. On this site you can also learn about the history of this display and the fabulous water garden display that takes place in the summer months. FYI, the Fire In Ice Festival is this weekend on Friday evening from 6-9 pm and Saturday from 11am-9pm and there will be lots of beautiful ice sculptures outside and one dancing Unicorn too. The boats will be in the water until March 13th so you have a few more weeks to enjoy them! ,
