Dear Boxford Animal Hospital Clients,
After 3 decades of practicing veterinary medicine, I will be retiring from the Boxford Animal Hospital at the end of June.
It has been such a joy and privilege to care for the pets of the Boxford community and to be trusted with their health and well-being over the years. I am truly grateful for the relationships built with so many of you and for the opportunity to share your pets’ lives through every stage.
I am also glad to be able to celebrate this milestone with my clients, who have made this journey so meaningful.
While I will deeply miss you and your pets, I leave knowing they will be in the care of Dr. Cari Hiler, Dr. Carol Prue, Heartland Veterinary Partners, and the team here at Boxford Animal Hospital. They remain committed to providing care for your pets.
Thank you for your trust, your kindness, and for allowing me to be part of your lives for so many years.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Dr. James E. Tanner

Dr. James Tanner is announcing his retirement from the Boxford Animal Hospital at the end of this month. He started his career in the veterinary field doing kennel work in 1979. He worked as a veterinary technician through college where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Pathobiology from the University of Connecticut in 1985. Dr. Tanner was part of the very first class at the Atlantic Veterinary College on Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1986. After one year he transferred to Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine and received his Doctorate in 1990 as well as met his future wife Dr. Carolyn Clegg. Dr. Tanner practiced on the South Shore until the fall of 1991 and then began practice at the Danvers Animal Hospital.
In November of 1994, Dr. Tanner and his wife purchased the Boxford Animal Hospital. The two significantly expanded the hospital and moved it to its current location at 200 Washington Street in the spring of 2006. They successfully ran the hospital for 30 years while raising two children. Their son James Tanner is Vice President of Software Engineering at the Krevera Corporation in Waltham. Their daughter Jacqueline Tanner just completed her second year of veterinary school at the Atlantic Veterinary College. Dr. Tanner will enjoy his retirement with Dr. Clegg who retired one year ago.
