Summit Dog and Cat Rescue - Boulder, Co We're a volunteer-run rescue based in Boulder, CO with volunteers throughout the Front Range. To fos Summit Dog Rescue - For Dogs with Altitude!

Welcome to our Colorado-based dog rescue. Our mission is to save dogs in Colorado and neighboring states from overcrowded shelters. We focus on "mountain dogs"--dogs who thrive at elevation and are as comfortable hiking above treeline as playing in a creek. Dogs with altitude! If you'd like to foster or adopt, go to http://www.summitdogrescue.org to begin the application process--and check out our adoptable dogs on the website also! Our application process takes more time than most rescues and there is no guarantee of a placement - if you're in a hurry or aren't up for the thorough screening process we undertake we fully encourage you to check your local shelter. Shelter dogs need homes more than anyone!

Meet Joe ā¤ļø — Courtesy Post

Joe is an adorable Border Collie/Flat-Coated Retriever mix (best guess) who was found wandering and severely underweight in Southern Colorado. A good-hearted local person took him in, got him the veterinary care he needed, and has been working hard to help him recover.

Now, unfortunately, she is traveling and can no longer keep him, so Joe urgently needs a safe place to land.

Joe is a true rescue dog. He has the kindest eyes and a joyful, tender side that comes out when he feels safe. But, like many dogs who have had difficult beginnings, Joe has some challenges that will require an understanding and patient person.

Joe’s biggest challenge right now is body sensitivity and handling. He needs someone who understands that hands touching, petting, or handling his body need to be carefully introduced as safe. He is making progress, and he comes with three behavior-consulting sessions with the wonderful Sarah Dugger to help his new person continue that work.

Joe has put his teeth on people when he has been overwhelmed by handling or over-petting, and he did nip a veterinarian while the vet was treating an injury to his face. No one has been seriously injured, but this is important information for anyone considering him. Because of his handling sensitivities, Joe would not be appropriate for a home with children.

Some of his behaviors— including the heartbreaking way he sometimes flops onto his back as though anticipating being hit—make us wonder whether he has experienced rough or frightening handling in his past. We don’t know his history, but we do know that he deserves a future where he can learn that people are safe and that he doesn’t have to defend himself.

Joe currently lives successfully with four other dogs and appears to do well with canine companions. We don’t know his history with cats. Given his background and where he has been living successfully, we think a rural or quieter home may be the best fit for him.

Joe is not a Summit Dog Rescue dog, but we are helping with his placement because we really don’t want him to end up in a shelter.

A shelter environment is unlikely to be the right place for a dog whose primary challenge involves body handling and fear. Even excellent shelters have limitations when it comes to the individualized screening, decompression, and ongoing behavioral support Joe needs.

Our goal is to help find Joe the person who will look at this sweet, complicated dog and see the dog he can become, not just the things that are difficult right now.

Whoever takes Joe in will have our support, too. We are happy to provide behavioral guidance to his adopter or rescue placement because we want to give this guy every chance to succeed.

Joe is looking for someone patient, compassionate, experienced, and willing to let trust develop at his pace. If that sounds like you—or if you are a rescue that might be able to help—please reach out.

Let’s keep this Colorado boy out of the shelter and help him find the safe, peaceful life he deserves. ā¤ļø

Meet Willow — a true old soul. (FKA Jojo)

There is something about Willow that you feel the moment you meet her. She has this incredibly sweet, gentle way of connecting with people, as though she already knows you.

Give her a little affection and she may quietly lean in, bring that big, beautiful head close, and gently nuzzle her nose into your neck. It’s one of those little Willow moments that makes you fall for her.

Willow is a 1-year-old, 50-pound Staffordshire Terrier mix who recently arrived in Colorado and is already proving to be an exceptional dog.

She loves her people and genuinely enjoys being with them, while also feeling confident and comfortable on her own.

She is playful and fun, but one of the things we love most about Willow is how beautifully she can shift gears. She can romp and play, and then settle down and relax when it’s time.

With her medium energy level, she can be an active companion for adventures or a calm, easy dog to hang out with.

Willow is a terrific dog-to-dog communicator. She has been around dogs of all sizes and does a wonderful job reading their signals, respecting boundaries, and adjusting her behavior. She enjoys canine friends and has a lovely social style.

She is house trained, crate trained, and comfortable being left alone for reasonable periods. She would be an especially wonderful companion for someone who works from home, happily curling up nearby while you work.

a young dog, she’ll still need regular exercise, enrichment, and interaction, but she has shown that she can settle beautifully.

Willow enjoys learning and is responsive to her people, making her a fun dog to continue training and build a relationship with.

Although she has only recently arrived in Colorado and we’re still getting to know her, everything we’ve seen points to a balanced, resilient, and special young dog.

We’re looking for an exceptional home for this exceptional girl — someone who will appreciate her sweet, thoughtful nature, give her a meaningful place in their life, and continue helping her grow into the wonderful adult dog she is becoming.

Willow is playful, affectionate, social, emotionally connected, and wonderfully easy to live with. She really is a special girl.

Hey Colorado, friends! Our sweet Oklahoma boy, River, has a pending adoption in Colorado, but his new owners cannot take possession of him until the end of October. Is there anyone willing to Foster him for five or six weeks until they are able to welcome him into their home? He is a very good boy! He’s just under two years old, crate, trained, and potty trained. He is friendly with all sizes of dogs. He would promise to be on his best behavior!

Alternatively, if we’re not able to find a Foster for him, he still needs a forever home! He is a total goofball and loves to play in any body of water or the hose! He promises to be a lifetime of entertainment, for whoever decides to sn**ch him up!

We can have him transported to Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Oregon or anywhere in between! He is about 50 pounds, we suspect he is Heeler and Australian Shepherd, already neutered, vaccinated, heartworm negative and micro chipped!

Adopted!!

Please share - Cuzco is a 6 year old Rottweiler in dire need of a new home, due to no fault of his own.

He is very playful and loves to go to dog parks.

Cuzco has been to daycare and boarding and does very well with the other dogs.

Cuzco grew up around kids and would be great with a family.

His guardian has health problems and can no longer keep him. He has until 9/3 to find a new home.

Please share. Contact SDR via email and we can connect you with his person.

Meet Espi!

Espi is a sweet and spunky 17-week-old kitten looking for her forever home.

Rescued at 8 weeks old as a stray from the streets of the desert Southwest, Espi has adjusted beautifully to an indoor life of luxury. She loves talking up a storm, relaxing in her hammock bed, hunting her far-too-many toys (wand toys are her favorite), eating everything in sight, and once she’s finally worn out for the day, cuddling on her foster parents’ laps.

We would love to find a home with another kitten of similar age, but she will likely be happy as an only cat or with older cats, as well. A home with a dog who is used to living with cats and mostly ignores them would be okay, too. She has not been tested with kids, but would likely do well with older kids who are up to her high energy levels.

Espi has been dealing with some digestive issues since her rescue, but she is improving steadily on a raw diet. Her ideal home would be willing to continue on this path to ensure her long-term health.

Espi always uses the litter box, is up-to-date on all her shots, and is ready to be spayed as soon as she puts on a little more weight. Ideally, she will be in her new home by September.

A small adoption fee will apply, and we will conduct interviews and home visits to ensure the best possible fit for this sweet girl. Currently located in Boulder, CO.

Espi is a courtesy post. Contact and how to apply in comments!!
