The Joy of Seeing Old Friends…

We were so delighted to receive a visit from KSF staffer, Libby and her husband Rob as they travelled through CT.
Libby has been with KSF from the very beginning (we met while stocking shelves at our local food pantry before KSF had even taken shape 😄), and knows the herd well. It was so sweet to watch KO & Libby reconnect after such a long time apart.
We know that social cohesion plays a key role in both horse and human wellbeing. The neuroscience geek in me got to wondering how much deeper was the impact for KO and Libby since they have years of history together. Neural Synchrony, the correlation of activity between two brains, is known to be present in familiar relationships, and has positive implications on our mental health.
It reminded me of the importance of maintaining those friendships we have, and perhaps re-liven those which have drifted away a bit.
Is there someone who would be benefit from your call, text or visit today? Your nervous system will thank you (and science shows that the benefits of reconnecting outweigh the fear of awkwardness, so go for it!).
We can’t wait to see you again Libby!! 🥰

And let us not forget the dear friends and family who must live with the weight of that loss. Many of our Veteran participants bear this terrible heaviness.
Thank you will never be enough.

Heavy rain weather like today used to mean a dull day for ponies with no exercise or training. With a fantastic indoor arena now at our disposal at the new facility, we get to still play and stay nice and dry despite the downpours and huge puddles outside.
Today Jocelyn got her first driving lesson as KO let that Lippett Morgan blood shine. A mix of training can keep things fresh and interesting for the horses and a versatile, well-rounded horse tends to be better balanced and adaptable. Albert Einstein said that “ the only source of knowledge is experience.” So the more things we try, the more we grow our depth of knowledge. Is there something you’ve been thinking of trying? I encourage you to GO FOR IT!
Well done, Jocelyn and KO!!

Napping and Snacking - always better with friends

And just watching their contentment breathes a peace into my own system, especially on a dreary day.

Did you know that taking just a moment to enjoy a scene like this, even if you are not personally experiencing it, has a positive effect on mood? So do yourself a favor; listen to the sounds, see the happy herd, take a deep breath, and enjoy the bath of happy neurochemicals.

Masters of Social Support

It is not unusual to see the herd engage in “mutual grooming”, also known as “allogrooming”. Research studies indicate that the frequency and duration of the sessions increase during times of stress, presumably in a “Tend and Befriend” proclivity (a theory of social response proposed by Shelley E. Taylor @ UCLA).
It is posited that the oxytocin (“hug hormone”) release mitigates stress by interacting with the body’s opioid system. In both human and equine species this Tend and Befriend emotional support behavior, which involves receiving AND giving support, is more pronounced in females, possibly due to Estrogen’s amplification of oxytocin’s effect.
Interestingly, when I witness this in the herd, I wouldn’t say that they seem particularly stressed. In fact, it seems to show up when they’re just chilling out. But maybe I need to look deeper.
What do you think? Have you ever noticed this draw to seek social support during times of stress show up in your life?

Subtle Signs of Well-being

Why would we celebrate Sansa’s shavings-laden tail?
Well, as anyone stewarding these magnificent animals would tell you, we are always attuned to signs of of their overall health - mental, emotional and physical.
In the heirarchy of needs, SAFETY - a predictable and stable environment free of threat - is preeminent. A horse won’t eat or drink, let alone lay down, if they don’t feel safe.
The fact that Sansa, our most sensitive in the herd, is finally feeling safe enough to lie down in her cushy shavings bed at night, is happy news indeed! 🥳
Connecticut is starting to feel like home to our precious herd.

Although they require less than humans at 5-7 hours per day, horses NEED quality sleep like humans to maintain health and to be able to consolidate learning.
Sansa hasn’t been laying down in her stall at night since the move, a clear stress indicator, so I was very relieved to see her joining her nap buddies this morning.
Polyphasic sleepers, horses get about 75% of their sleep standing up in multiple doses as they employ a natural “stay apparatus” which keeps them upright (and ready for flight from a predator). However they ONLY achieve deep REM sleep when laying down.
You will almost always see a “sentry”, in this case Archie, who stays up and alert for predators, allowing the rest of the herd to feel safe enough to enter deep sleep.
(Don’t worry - Archie’s been laying down at night as usual, so he got his beauty sleep too 💤)

Thank you all for the messages inquiring about the move to Connecticut- we made it yesterday afternoon! The horses were understandably stressed by the move and new environment, but knew how to take care of themselves (and each other as you can see Sansa and Holly grooming each other).
This place is Horse Heaven 🌈 and we can’t wait for you to join us!

INTRODUCING…

⭐️ KSF’s Farm Manager Extraordinaire! ⭐️

Jocelyn came highly recommended by the previous owners of our incredible new facility, previously Rendez-Vous Farm, and we can see why! Her powerful work ethic, delightfully positive attitude combined with her knowledge and experience, make her a tremendous asset as we step into our next chapter. We’ve had a couple of great work days together (with Dakota of course!) as we prepare for the herd’s arrival.
Please join me in welcoming the newest member of Team KSF!! 🎉
We can’t wait to get programming up and running with Jocelyn at the helm of operations!!
Love the shirt, Jocelyn 😃
Caroline, thank you for the excellent recommendation!!

A number of you have asked if the herd has made the move to the new facility yet.
Well…we had a medical delay.
Sweet Sansa somehow sustained a puncture wound in the pasture which required a number of medications and a couple of visits by our wonderful partners in care C3 Equine Veterinary Services, LLC. We want her feeling 💯 before making the move, which will hopefully be this week!
Please send your healing thoughts to Sweet Sansa 🏥
Thank you!
