This week, we want to honor a special little girl named Mitzi, our Pet of the Week. Mitzi was a beloved patient at Lake Tapps Vet, and her visits always brought joy and smiles to everyone here. Her gentle spirit touched our hearts, and she will forever hold a special place in our memories. We find comfort imagining her happily playing with lamb chop stuffies over the rainbow bridge, free and joyful. Mitzi’s memory lives on in our hearts, and we send love to her family during this tender time.

We’d also like to introduce Alisha! Our wonderful licensed Veterinary Technician hee at Lake Tapps Veterinary Hospital. She’s been in the veterinary field since 2011, after graduating from Pima Medical. She initially aimed to become a veterinarian but decided she preferred a more hands-on role with patients. Her favorite animal to work with is a sassy dog. To keep pets calm, she uses lots of treats and, in her words, a baby voice, which always helps settle them down. One thing she wishes clients understood about being a Vet Tech is that “we can do more than a nurse, as our knowledge covers different anatomies for various species.” There’s a common misconception that we’re only here for money, but she emphasizes that we genuinely care about and advocate for pets during their visits. We work hard to ensure each visit is safe. On her days off, she enjoys hiking or going to concerts. If she could have a superpower, she would be an indoor/outdoor feline, since she wouldn’t like being confined and would love to hunt and bring gifts. The most rewarding part of her job is being hands-on with patients and knowing she contributes to making a difference in their lives. Her advice for new Vet Techs is to find the right team to work with, as that’s crucial, and to maintain a healthy work/life balance.

We’re excited to introduce Ann! One of our licensed Veterinary Technicians here at Lake Tapps Veterinary Hospital. She pursued a career in veterinary medicine because she has always loved animals and dreamed of working at a zoo. She mentions that getting into zoos is very competitive, so general practice was her next best option. Ann started her VetMed journey in 2007 as a Client Service Representative, was promoted to Veterinary Assistant, and completed her Veterinary Technician Degree at Pierce College in 2010. She particularly enjoys anesthetic procedures involving dental cleanings and surgeries. She’s passionate about educating clients on the importance of veterinary care. Ann wants clients to know that Veterinary Technicians do much more than just nail trims and vaccines—they perform tasks like drawing blood, restraining animals, administering anesthesia, assisting in surgeries, and sometimes advocating for pets. Many people think techs only play with puppies and kittens, which she wishes was true. Her most rewarding moment at work is seeing a pet recover after a dental procedure, especially when she gets to clean a very dirty mouth. She helps keep pets calm with lots of treats and enjoys sitting on the floor with pets while talking to their owners to make everyone feel safe. Her favorite animals to work with are dogs, though she used to work with birds, which was very fun. The funniest thing she saw was a golden retriever walking into the hospital with three tennis balls in its mouth. If Ann could have any animal superpower, it would be to sleep all day like a cat. In her free time, she loves reading and experimenting with cake decorating. Her advice for new technicians is to maintain a good work/life balance, prioritize self-care, and advocate for themselves and their patients.
