A lot of newbies are getting Fartilis, and while thats great- I do want to speak a word of caution. There are some things to consider for beginners before starting with a fartilis as your first jumping spider. We consider them more of an Intermediate Care species during the molting stages.
*Fartilis can and will have mismolts during the growing stages if theyre not adequately hydrated. This means you absolutely HAVE to feed your feeder bugs and keep them hydrated. A piece of organic carrot or potato a couple times per week in with your mini mealworms will not only keep them more nutritious, but hydrated feeders are actually more wiggly and desirable!
*They *can* be picky eaters. This means sometimes you will need to exclusively feed flying bugs or other very active prey- so you need to be prepared to hatch flies or acquire a variety of feeders if needed to see what your spider will eat.
*They DO require a bit higher heat and humidity than most people keep their homes. Most people i get having issues with eating or molting are not giving them bright enough light, heat or humidity to really thrive. The most important part to replicate is day time heat. About 80-85 is where they really thrive. A bright grow light can help keep things toasty. Remember guys they mainly live in Mexico- so we want to try to replicate their natural living conditions.
*While a bioactive is not required, we find it most easily keeps their humidity levels in the sweet spot. They like to drink often- we mist them daily. Having a bioactive allows for areas of condensation and humidity pockets near the bottom in which they can drink or move towards if needed. A dry style (dollhouse) enclosure does not provide any sort of humidity gradient. While it may be sufficient for a fartilis at adulthood, we strongly urge against this style for growing juveniles. Another workaround is to keep non-living damp sphagnum moss at the bottom if you prefer to avoid a bioactive enclosure.
Overall no one can deny that Fartilis are on of the most beautiful and interactive jumpers out there. We think anyone is capable of owning one with being armed with the knowledge they need to be successful π
