This is me with my dog Fable (2 y/o CLD) and my puppy, Savvy (13 week old, BC), who unfortunately both have conjunctivitis for the second time because the condition has made its way from dog to dog in my house despite my best efforts.
In this case, the dogs must have eye drops 3 times daily for 5 days. Instead of wrestling my dogs to the ground and holding their eyes open, which is the unfortunate reality for some dogs, we worked together to create a consent driven approach that has made the process so easy, and rewarding.
If you told me to imagine a nightmare scenario, I might say a contagious condition in my 5 dog household. And so, you can imagine my chagrin when my new puppy brought conjunctivitis into my home. Of course these things can happen. If I look at the bright side of the issue however, it would be that it gave me the opportunity to develop a consent driven application of eye drops, a big win.
Some are going to consider the obvious question,...but how much time did that take!?!? Less time than to wrestle the drops in!!! As a behavior professional who also works in the vet med space I can assure you this approach takes less time, and less hands on the dog. It's also probably really clear how much less stressful this is for both the dogs and for me! And the whole thing has been a benefit to our dog/person relationship rather than a 3 times daily war.
