Berkeley Animal Care Services The Berkeley Animal Care Services shelter is responsible for the community's animals in need. We are the volunteers of Berkeley Animal Care Services.

If you are interested in adopting one of the animals featured on this page, please visit or call BACS directly. As we are only volunteers and not employees of the shelter, we may not have the most current information available, although we do try and keep this page as updated as possible. Information regarding adoption fees, criteria and special programs is provided as a courtesy for prospective adopters. It is set by the City of Berkeley and Berkeley Animal Care Services, not the volunteers who maintain this page.

Adoption Fees:
Dogs $125.00 / Cats $100 -- include shots, microchip, spay or neuter
Rabbits, BIrds, Exotics: $25
Rodents: $10

60/6/60 Adoption Program, Partnering Senior Animals with Senior Friends -- If you are 60 or older and adopt an animal who is 6 or older, you'll get 60% off the adoption fee! Adoption Criteria:
In order to qualify as an adopter, you must bring proof of home ownership or your rental contract showing you are allowed to have pets before the adoption can be completed. If you're coming to adopt a new family or household pet, please bring your family members or other members of the household with you to the shelter -- including any other dogs in the family. We want to make sure your new dog is a good fit for both 2-leggers and 4-leggers alike.

Luca is a special 2-year-old boy looking for a home that understands and appreciates him just as he is. ❤️

This playful, active guy loves wand toys, playing fetch, backyard adventures, and following his people around the house. He may not be a lap cat or cuddler, but he enjoys being near you and is making progress learning to enjoy pets.

Luca can become overstimulated by touch and may bite or kick, so he needs an experienced cat owner who understands feline body language and respects his boundaries. He needs a home without other cats or young children. He has lived with dogs and has even befriended his foster home's 75-pound pit bull! 🐶

Luca may not be your typical cat, but for the right person or couple, he could be a wonderful companion. Could you be his person? 💕

It’s Throwback Thursday, which means it’s time for an adoption update! This time from Zeus

“This is Zeus. He was adopted from BAC in 2018. We have been on many adventures together throughout the years, including a few road trips to Washington and getting to experience snow for the first time. He was my running buddy but has since retired, so now we enjoy nice strolls around the bay.”

Notch is a social butterfly in kitten form! 🦋 This friendly, outgoing little guy seems to have never met a person or animal he didn’t like and is always ready to make a new friend. He especially loves being with his people, whether he’s curled up in your lap, climbing onto your shoulder for the best views, or happily playing with his toys nearby while you do your own thing. And if you needed any more reason to fall for him, just take a look at those wonderfully unique markings! ✨

Notch has tested positive for FeLV (feline leukemia virus), so he’ll need an indoor-only home with adopters who are ready to keep up with his veterinary care and monitor his health as he grows. In return, this little charmer will bring plenty of fun, companionship, and kitten antics to your days! 🐾

Gemma may be a little shy at first, but this sweet girl has so much love to give! She arrived at the shelter with an injury to one of her feet that is still being treated, but even with everything she’s been through, this adorable lady is already stealing hearts left and right. Give her a little time to get comfortable, and you’ll discover a cuddly companion who loves nothing more than being close to her favorite people. Whether she’s quietly following along behind you, snuggling up by your side, or settling down nearby with a squeaky toy when it’s time to relax, Gemma is happiest simply being part of your world. Zoltan may not be able to predict the future, but this sweet little fortune teller has a pretty good idea of what yours should look like: lots of love, plenty of playtime, and a kitten by your side! This affectionate little guy is happiest when he’s getting attention from his people, soaking up pets, cuddles, and all the affection he can possibly get. When he’s not busy charming everyone around him, Zoltan is ready to play, pounce, and show off his fun-loving kitten personality.
