You can take the scientist out of the lab, but you can't take the lab out of the scientist. My entire little farm is one experiment after another. If you know a little bit about flower pollination, you understand that pollinators, like butterflies & bees, get pollen on their feet, and as they go from plant to plant, they carry the genetic material to the other flowers nearby. This is what is called "open pollination" and the seeds created by that process will be random combinations of the flowers planted near each other. However, by isolating certain flowers or buds, you can breed your own varieties! ๐คฏ
Last season, I used organza bags to keep the pollinators from landing on some of my favorites, and I pollinated them by hand using a paintbrush. I saved the resulting seeds, and this is the only seedling that survived to maturity! So very proud of my little peach beauty. Love her color so much! Hoping to cross her with some others this year to see what we can get for next season!
