Happy ! 🐾🧡 Today is all about celebrating the vibrant, affectionate, and famously quirky orange cats that light up our lives. Behind that fiery fur is a genetic marvel: nearly 80% of ginger cats are male due to the orange coat gene living on the X chromosome, and their striking red hues come from pheomelanin—the exact same pigment responsible for red hair in humans!

Whether they are rocking their iconic forehead "M", showing off their adorable nose freckles as they age, or running on a single shared brain cell at 3 AM, orange tabbies are truly one of a kind. Give your favorite sunbeam hunter an extra squeeze and a treat today! Pictured here is my late cat Otis. Although he is no longer with me, I think of him on this day. 🐈✨

Good info

We get the question all the time about what to do with kitties pottying outside of their litter box. I loved the information this person shared on another page:

Hi, lifelong cat lover & owner here! Here are a few suggestions that may help you figure out why your kitty is unhappy with their toilet area.

Since they are getting to be senior kitties, a cat box with a lower entry ledge is best especially with a cat with behavioral urinating. They do make extra large stainless steel litterboxes with low entry (I have 3 - 14 year old kitties)

Plastic litter boxes retain odors - the new stainless steel do not. Even though you can’t smell it - cats noses are amazing!! They have over 200 million olfactory receptors compared to our measly 5-6 million 😅😳

Scoop boxes 3,4,5x a day or as soon as they use it. You can’t smell like the cats & with behavioral urinating cleanliness is imperative due to their noses. You can also set up a ring camera to alert you of use. Remove from house after you scoop again their noses 🤩I use the x-large brown paper lunch bags

Have you changed type of litter or brand? This can also trigger behavioral urinating.

Any change at home living whether in family members or amount of time away from home. Living situations trigger stress in some cats and urinating outside of boxes is common.

What do you use to clean the litterbox? With their amazing noses maybe the smell is too much for them.

Have you changed location of boxes in basement?

When a cat urinates outside the box and it isn’t related to a UTI it takes detective work.

If you ruled out everything above then add a third box with a low dust litter that’s natural like okocat wood litter (they make several different types of scoopable or pine pellets (aren’t scoopable though). Clay is very hard on their lungs & silica litter is smelly.

Also some cats start disliking hooded / covered litterboxes (again their noses).

I use a variety of boxes for my 4 cats. An extra large stainless steel box with low entry, a box in a covered cabinet & then an automatic cat box. That way they all have a preference but my camera shows me they use all 3 at times. I use the okocat scoopable wood pellets & litter as I have an asthmatic kitty. I also use a steel litter scoop as plastics retain odor even though we can’t smell it 👃Clay litter is very hard on their lungs. I never have to completely empty & throw out my litter as I scoop 3 times a day & but I am meticulous about getting all the pieces to keep it very clean. I clean them with just water from pressure washer / or shower in winter.
You will also need to treat your concrete as it’s porous and has many microscopic holes. I would use a good enzymatic cleaner for cat urine. Afterwards you could use disposable puppy pads on the floor to keep from having to clean your concrete all the time as that’ll get expensive. Just replace the puppy pad if it gets soiled.
Hope these tips help.

Don't bathe cats unless they get something yucky on their fur.

Cats are excellent self-groomers, but there are some messes they shouldn't clean.
