💧🐾 A reminder for our Currituck County families — the current Boil Water Advisory applies to our pets too! 🐶🐱

While we are remembering to use safe water for ourselves and our families, please do not forget about the four-legged members of the family. 💜

🚰 Any water being added to your pet’s bowl for drinking or preparing/mixing with their food should be bottled water OR tap water that has been vigorously boiled for at least one full minute and then allowed to cool completely.

🛁🐾 I would also recommend holding off on non-essential baths until the advisory has been lifted. Currituck County advises extra caution when bathing babies and toddlers because they can easily swallow bath water, and the same concern applies to our pets. Pets may drink water during a bath or ingest it while licking their coat afterward.

📍 If you live outside the affected area but have family, friends, or neighbors who may be impacted, please reach out or share this with them so we can help keep both our two-legged and four-legged friends safe. 💜🐾

Love finds a way to make itself known. 🌈🦋🐦💜

A red cardinal appearing when your heart needs it most.
A blue butterfly that stays just a little longer.
A rainbow arriving at exactly the right moment.

Over the last decade, I have helped thousands of families say goodbye to their four-legged babies. And through those years, I have witnessed things during that transition — between here and the moment our babies receive their angel wings — that have felt remarkable, surreal, and deeply meaningful. 😇

One experience I will never forget was a hummingbird that flew inside a screened-in porch almost immediately after a dog received his angel wings. It circled around this beautiful doggy soul & his family and eventually found its way back outside.

There are moments like this that carry intention. They carry presence. They carry purpose.

They remind us that the love we share with our pets does not simply disappear when their physical bodies leave this world. Sometimes that love finds another way to reach us — if we are open enough to see it. 💜🐾

🌈 A little reassurance from the sky tonight 🌈

On my way home, I looked up and saw this rainbow stretching across the sky.

I thought of all of the families whose four-legged babies became angels this weekend. 💜🐾

I see this as a little reassurance that they made it safely to the bridge. 🌈 Their bodies are strong and healthy again, and they are setting out on their next adventure—surrounded by love and carrying every bit of the bond they shared with their families.

Sending so much love to every family missing their baby tonight. 💜🐾

And sending love to all of those beautiful angels—strong and healthy again, running freely across the bridge and carrying their families' love with them every step of the way. 🌈🐾💜

There is something beautiful about that little space between seasons — when summer is still here, yet we can begin to notice small signs that change is coming.

Our pets experience those transitions right alongside us. As they grow older, what brings comfort, joy, and connection may begin to look a little different.

Veterinary hospice and palliative medicine is about so much more than saying goodbye. 💜🐾

It is medicine focused on comfort, quality of life, and helping our pets continue to engage with the world in meaningful ways — even as their needs begin to change.

This month, I wrote about why the proposed recognition of **Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine as a veterinary specialty** matters so deeply to me, to the veterinary profession, and most importantly, to pets and the people who love them.

Right now, **pet families have an opportunity to add their voices to this conversation.**

The American Veterinary Medical Association is accepting public comments on the proposed specialty through **tomorrow, August 13 at 11:59 PM ET.**

If hospice or palliative care has ever touched the life of a pet you love, I hope you will consider taking a few minutes to share your experience and your thoughts. Your voice matters. 💜

There is a comforting thought that beyond this world, our dogs are welcomed with joy, softness, and love. 🌈🐾

I like to imagine a sweet welcome committee waiting at Rainbow Bridge — happy tails, open paws, kind faces, comforting places to rest, new friends to meet, and plenty of their favorite joys to discover.

Happy Earth Pet Hospice is celebrating one year! 💜🐾🌎

One year ago, Happy Earth began with a vision rooted in compassion and connection: that pets nearing the end of life deserve the same wonderful support and care in their final days, weeks, and months that surrounded them throughout all the years before.

Over this first year, so many families have welcomed me into their homes and hearts. I have had the privilege of meeting incredible pets and the people who love them, listening to their stories, and experiencing the love that connects them. 💜

Every pet, every family, and every connection has become part of Happy Earth’s story.

I am deeply grateful for the trust families have placed in me. It is an honor to walk beside you as you care for the four-legged family members whose love is woven through every part of your lives. 🐾

**Did a veterinarian help your pet have a peaceful goodbye?**

Veterinary hospice and palliative care can provide so much more than support during a pet’s final moments. This type of care may include pain and symptom management, quality-of-life guidance, support for families facing difficult decisions, and a peaceful goodbye surrounded by love.

The American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine is currently working toward recognition as an official veterinary specialty organization.

This matters because greater recognition can help expand education, training, research, and access to veterinarians with advanced expertise in hospice, palliative medicine, and end-of-life care.

The AVMA is currently accepting public comments, and pet families are invited to share why this care matters.

I had a little fun creating this cartoon today. 🐶🌈💜

Dogs find so much joy in this world—and I like to imagine there are a few things they would happily leave behind when they arrive in puppy heaven.

My top three things that are definitely NOT there:

3. Thunderstorms ⛈️
4. Fireworks 🎆
5. Nail trims ✂️🐾

I genuinely smile when I imagine every doggy’s nails staying the perfect length all day, every day. No clippers. No suspiciously cheerful humans reaching for their paws. Just perfect paws forever. 😂

Of course, every doggy would create a different list. Some would erase vacuums or baths forever. Others would gladly get rid of car rides, delivery trucks, or the confusing rule that some snacks are somehow “not for dogs.” 😂🐾
