A new federal lawsuit is asking the IRS to recognize pets as legal dependents for tax purposes.

The case was filed by New York attorney Amanda Reynolds, who argues that her golden retriever, Finnegan, is completely financially dependent on her.

She reportedly spends more than $5,000 a year on his food, housing, veterinary care, training, daycare and other necessities.

Her argument is simple.

Finnegan lives with her.

He has no income.

And she pays for virtually everything he needs.

So she believes pet owners should at least be allowed to seek some form of tax recognition for animals that depend entirely on them.

Right now, the IRS does not allow pets to be claimed as dependents.

The lawsuit faces a difficult legal battle because existing tax law defines dependents around qualifying children and relatives.

But the case is still raising an interesting question.

If millions of Americans financially support pets like members of the family, should the tax system recognize any of that cost?
