Your dog doesn’t need to say hello to everybody to be well socialized.

Today we took training to back Lowe’s once again to work around shopping carts, unfamiliar people, new smells, noises and plenty of distractions.

The goal wasn’t to make the dog interact with everything. The goal was to teach them that they can experience something new, remain calm, look to their handler for guidance and keep moving.

That’s what real-world socialization looks like.

Because obedience in the living room is one thing. Being able to take your dog into the real world with confidence is another. 🐕‍🦺

Cooper is a great example of why obedience training is only part of the picture.

He already had some obedience under his belt, but social settings were a different story. Loud noises, unfamiliar environments, and other dogs could make things much more difficult for him.

So we took the training to the mall and worked on desensitization, neutrality, and confidence around real-world distractions.

The goal isn’t for Cooper to interact with every dog or ignore everything around him.

The goal is for him to be able to experience those things and still listen to his handler.

That’s when obedience starts becoming life skills.

First time competing in Rally with Mando! 🐕🏽

We made a few mistakes, some of them were definitely my fault 😂, but Mando did really well and I’m proud of him.

Most importantly, we had fun. That’s one of the things I’ve come to appreciate about dog sports. It gives you and your dog something to work toward and a great outlet for all the training you’re putting in.

Definitely learned a lot from this one. Looking forward to getting back in the ring and getting better together.

Most people think they’re paying for dog training so their dog can sit, stay, or heel.

They’re not.

They’re paying for freedom.

Freedom to bring their dog to family outings. Freedom to enjoy walks instead of dreading them. Freedom to grab coffee, visit friends, or relax knowing their dog can handle the moment.

Obedience is just the vehicle that gets you there.

So don’t train for perfect commands. Train for the life you want to live with your dog.

Every trip doesn’t have to be a dedicated training session.

Sometimes it’s meeting new clients.
Sometimes it’s grabbing coffee.
Sometimes it’s preparing for obedience trials.

The key is using everyday moments to reinforce the behaviors you want. A dog that’s only obedient in your backyard isn’t truly trained.

If you want reliability, practice in the places you actually live life. 🐾
