We want to help more Dobermans. We need your help to do it.

We’ve been receiving so many requests to help Dobermans in need, and we wish we could say yes to every one of them. But the reality is that we can only take in dogs when we have foster homes available.

DAR&E is a foster-based rescue. We don’t have a shelter where dogs can wait for their forever homes. Instead, they stay with volunteer foster families who give them a safe place to land, learn to trust, and get ready for their next chapter.

When we don’t have an available foster home, we often have to say no to a dog who needs us. And that’s hard.

Could you be the person who helps us say yes?

Fostering gives a Doberman a safe home while we work to find their permanent family. DAR&E provides support throughout the process, and you provide the home, care, and companionship that help a dog get a fresh start.

You don’t have to foster forever. You just have to be willing to make a difference for one dog at a time.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, now is the time to take that next step. And if you can’t foster yourself, please share this post with someone who might be able to help.

More foster homes mean more Dobermans we can save.

“But why does my yard have to be fenced?” 👀
If you’re thinking about adopting a Doberman puppy from DAR&E, you may have noticed one of our requirements: homes adopting a dog under one year old must have a fully fenced yard.
And no, it’s not because we think every puppy needs a giant backyard.
Young Dobermans are still developing physically and mentally. They’re curious, energetic, impulsive, and definitely not known for making consistently good decisions. A secure, fenced space gives them somewhere to safely:
• Run, play, and get age-appropriate exercise
• Explore their environment without the risks of an unfenced yard
• Practice recall and other skills in a controlled setting
• Burn off some of that puppy energy
• Build confidence while learning how to navigate the world
As dogs mature, their needs change, which is why this requirement specifically applies to dogs under one year old. Adult Dobermans can absolutely thrive in homes without a fenced yard when their individual needs can be appropriately met.
A fenced yard is just one piece of raising a successful Doberman. Puppies also need training, structure, socialization, supervision, exercise, and a whole lot of patience.
These requirements aren’t about finding the “perfect” home. They’re about setting each dog up for a safe, successful transition into their forever home.

GLITCH IN THE MATRIX: MEET COOPER 2.0! 🐾

No, your feed isn’t repeating itself, and no, our intake team didn’t just pick our favorite name twice. The rescue universe simply decided one Cooper wasn’t enough, so the universe sent us two. Both arrived fully branded with the exact same name, so here we are!

Allow us to present your official field guide to telling our Coopers apart:

Cooper Edition One:
Age: ~1.5 years old
Aesthetic: Velvety, natural ears and a docked tail
Vibe: Energetic, goofy, and still actively searching for his forever home.

Cooper Edition Two:
Age: Freshly minted 2-year-old (he just celebrated the big 0-2 while in rescue with us! 🎂)
Aesthetic: Classic black and tan, cropped ears, and a docked tail
Vibe: Handsome, sleek, and ready to be your huge lap dog.

Two young, gorgeous Doberman boys. Two totally different ear styles. Zero chance of yelling the wrong name in the rescue.

Double your Cooper, double your fun. View their adoption profiles and submit an application at dobe.net

DOBERMAN CONFESSIONS 🤫I have referred to my Doberman as my child. More than once. Completely unironically. “I’m sorry, I need to leave work early, Ollie has a doctor’s appointment.” Your turn. What’s your Doberman confession?

“If only I didn’t have five cats, a bearded dragon, and a studio apartment!”
Social media comments are always full of love. Adoption applications? Crickets.

Meet Cody and Cooper. Between the two of them, they have collected hundreds of heart emojis, plenty of sympathetic sighs, and zero adoption applications.

Someone out there is seriously missing out on two incredible boys:

Cody: Our 12-year-old gentleman. He has completely mastered the art of low-key companionship, squirrel watching, and couch lounging.

Cooper: Our goofy, handsome young pup (~1.5 years old). He is crate trained, knows his basics, loves a good yard zoomie session, and is ready for an active family to help him show off his full potential.

Senior sweetness or young playful energy, we have both ends of the spectrum covered. Apply to adopt at dobe.net! DAR&E adopts to Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware, and in portions of both eastern West Virginia and southern Pennsylvania.

Lucy still needs us. 💙

When we first shared Lucy’s story, we asked for your help giving this brave 6-year-old Doberman a chance at a life without pain. Thanks to the generosity of so many people, she’s been able to begin her journey toward healing. But we’re not at the finish line yet.

Lucy has endured years of hardship and neglect, and she deserves so much more than simply surviving. She deserves to run, play, explore, and enjoy the life every dog should have.

Her medical care is expensive, and we still need donations to help cover her surgeries, custom braces, rehabilitation, and recovery.

Can you help Lucy get the care she needs?

Every donation, no matter the size, helps us get closer to covering her expenses. And if you’re unable to donate right now, sharing this post can help Lucy’s story reach someone who can.

Please consider making a donation today. Lucy’s journey isn’t over, and we want to make sure she has everything she needs for the road ahead.

Donate to Lucy’s GoFundMe:

Thank you for standing behind Lucy and helping give her the second chance she deserves. 💙

Two puppies are twice the fun, right? Sometimes. But bringing home littermates, or two puppies close in age, can create some unique challenges.
You may have heard the term “littermate syndrome.” It isn’t a formal veterinary diagnosis, and there’s debate about exactly what causes it. But rescues and trainers regularly see problems when two young dogs become overly dependent on each other instead of learning how to confidently navigate the world on their own.
You might see:
• Extreme distress when separated
• Fearfulness or reactivity toward new people, dogs, or environments
• Difficulty focusing on their humans when they’re together
• Competition or conflict as they mature
• One puppy becoming much more confident while the other relies heavily on them
• Training becoming harder because the puppies are more interested in each other than their humans
And it’s not limited to actual siblings. Two unrelated puppies of similar ages can develop the same dynamic.
That doesn’t mean raising two puppies together is impossible. It means it requires significantly more intentional management: separate training, individual socialization, one-on-one time, separate walks and outings, independent rest, and plenty of opportunities for each dog to build confidence without the other.
From a rescue perspective, this is one reason we encourage adopters to let their first dog settle in before adding another puppy or young dog. Your new dog needs time to bond with you, learn the household routine, and develop confidence as an individual.
Two dogs can absolutely become wonderful companions. But the goal isn’t simply for them to be inseparable.
The goal is two confident dogs who can happily exist together and independently.

Meet Lupo! Your future adventure buddy, couch companion, and personal space enthusiast (well, not exactly).

Lupo is a 5-year-old, neutered black-and-rust Doberman with a big personality and an even bigger heart. This goofy, affectionate guy loves snuggling on the couch, exploring the outdoors, going for car rides, and showing off his tricks. He’s also a fan of treats and a good outfit, so don’t be surprised if he becomes your most stylish travel companion.

Lupo has a few quirks that make him uniquely himself. Balloons? Suspicious. Smoke? Absolutely not. His own shadow? Occasionally questionable. But life is never boring with Lupo around.

He’s house-trained, crate-trained, and leash-trained, and he gets along well with spayed and neutered dogs. He does have food and environmental allergies that his family manages with a prescription diet and daily medication, and he wears a basket muzzle on walks to help keep him safe because he’s prone to picking things up off the ground.

Lupo is looking for an adult-only home that will appreciate his goofy charm, respect his needs, and give him all the love and adventures he deserves. Visiting children will need close supervision. Cats are an unknown.

Lupo is being listed as a courtesy dog through DAR&E, which means his family is helping him find the right forever home. They are happy to answer questions by phone and arrange a meet-and-greet for interested adopters.

Could Lupo be your new best friend? Help us find this lovable goofball the home he’s been waiting for. Share this post to help Lupo find his people!
