Sumi is learning the very first step toward walking politely on a leash. Before we ever expect a dog to walk next to us while we’re both moving, we first teach them where we want them to be while standing still aka The Heel Position.

Part 2 of Buddy’s resource guarding rehab.

Now that Buddy understands “Done” we have progressed his training even further. Instead of just dropping the item, he now has to move even farther away from it, creating more distance and helping break the habit of guarding.

As his understanding improved, we also began fading out the verbal command. The goal is for Buddy to no longer rely on hearing the word “Done,” but instead learn that whenever someone approaches something he has that he should automatically drop the item and move away from it.

This is an important step because in real life, you won’t always have time to give a command before someone walks up to your dog. We want the correct decision to become Buddy’s default response, not something that only happens when he’s told.
